Mr. Stanford Brown, of Boone, sper'i the week-end here with friends. Mrs. P. H. Underwood had the misfortune to fall and hurt her arm badly last week. Her friends wish for her a speedy recovery. Miss Hilda Gae Renegar, stu dent at W. C. U. N. C., Greens boro, spent a few days here last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Renegar. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hampton and daughter, Sarah Frances, vis ited relatives near Dobson Sun day. Mr. Harvey Madison, a mem ber of the faculty here, is ill at his home this week. Miss Magdalene Martin re turned home Tuesday after spending the past week in Win ston-Salem with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Eskridge are listed among the sick this week. Mrs. Hugh Holcomb and chil dren, Lynn and Aleine, and Mrs.! Marvin May berry and children,! Ruth and Nancy, spent Thursday afternoon in Winston-Salem. Miss Annie Louise Smith, a former nurse in the Hugh Chat ham Memorial hospital, now nursing in New York, was the week-end guest of Mrs. Jack Brown and Mrs. Herman Hol comb. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Chappell and daughter, Dorethea, visited Mr. Tom Swaim, of Buck Shoals community, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hunt, of West Yadkin, were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hemric. Miss Rama Blackwood, student at W. C. U. N. C., (Greensboro, spent a few days here last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Turner Blackwood. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gough spent the week-end in Yadkin ville. Sam Osborne spent a few days last week in south Carolina. R. M. Osborne and Charles Gil liam spent Sunday in Sparta. Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Faw spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Faw in Hickory. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Seaver and Junior Anthony spent Monday in Charlotte visiting friends. Max Anthony spent Thursday in Winston-Salem attending to business matters. Mrs. M. A. Holcomb was in charge of the devotional. Miss Emma Eller was in charge of the program, "The Commission to Carry on (Evan gelism)" and was assisted by Misses Thelma Shore, Hazel Phil lips, Bertha Adams, and Mrs. F. A. Lineberry. During the business period, Mrs. Harvey Hemric was enroll ed as a new member. Refreshments were served dur ing the social hour. WILL HOLD SERIES OF CLASSES FOR FARMERS Alan F. Kinzie, agricultural in structor at Mountain Park school, will begin a series of evening classes for farmers in the com muities served by the school. Classes will be held on each Wed nesday evening at the home of Howard Swift, near State Road; on Thursday evening at the Zephyr school building, and on Friday evening at the Mountain Park school. Moving picture slides will be shown on all of the subjects discussed. All farmers in the communities are urged to attend the meetings. McDaniel's Department Store ELKIN, N. C. LOCAL WOMAN SUFFERS SLIGHT BURNS IN FIRE Mrs. W. M. Cundiff, 80, narrow ly escaped suffocation and re ceived slight burns early Sunday morning at her home on Bridge Street, when a couch on which she was sleeping ignited from a spark from an open grate. Mrs. Cundiff retired to her room on the second floor early In the evening, but returned to the living room about midnight when she was unable to sleep and kindled a fire in the grate. She fell asleep on a divan in front of the fire and was awakened about 3 o'clock with the room filled with smoke from the burning couoh and quilts. Neighbors were' aroused by her calls for aid and came to her rescue. The fire was extinguished and the damage was very slight. Mrs. Cundiff received slight burns on one hand and foot. S. S. CONVENTION TO CONVENE SUNDAY The Surry Baptist Association al Sunday school convention will convene with the First Baptist church in this city Sunday after noon at 2:15. All churches in the county are invited to participate. Gennans have been warned not to listen to foreign radios. JOHN DAVID SIMMONS IS CLAIMED BY DEATH John David Simmons, 83, died Tuesday evening at his home at State Road. Mr. Simmons was a native of Wilkes county but had resided near Elkin for a number of years. He was twice married, first to Miss Linda Jolly and after her death to Miss Marjorie Lowe. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. J. I. Gentry and C. R. Simmons, of Elkin; Mrs. Yan cey Riddle, of Mt. Airy; T. V. Simmons, of Arlington; Grover Simmons, High Point; Clay Sim mons, Randleman, and Mrs. P. P. Ray, State Road. Thirty-three grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from Pop lar Springs Baptist church, where he was a member. MRS. SARAH BURCHAM PASSES THURSDAY Mrs. Sarah Alice Burcham, 76, died Thursday night at her home on Hospital Road following an illness of only a few days. Mrs. Burcham had been a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist church for almost 50 years. She is survived by five chil dren, Mrs. Gurney Martin, of Elkin, with whom she made her home; LewJs Burcham, Newton; Clay Burcham, Elkin; Houston Burcham, JonesviUe; Raymond Burcham, Elkin; 22 grandchil dren; 5 great-grandchildren and one brother, Ransom Shores, of Elkin. Funeral services were held Sat urday morning at 11 o'clock from Pleasant Hill Baptist church. In terment was in the family plot in the church cemetery. COMMISSIONERS HOLD REGULAR MEET MONDAY The County Commissioners met in Dobson Monday for their reg ular monthly meeting. Only rou tine business was disposed of. ,n Thursday, February 8. 1940 Idaho shipped 30,000 pounds of dry peas to Scandinavia last week. ADMINISTRATORS NOTICE Having qualified as adminis trator of the estate N of Thomas Simmons, late of Surry county, this is to notify all persons hold ing claims against said estate to present them to the undersigned within one year from date of this notice or same will be pleaded in bar of their recovery.
