C. that it was one of the most ac tive years in the entire history of the department. Heading the list of immuniza tions made by the department is the 5,135 typhoid tests followed by 4,286 tuberculin tests, 1,904 diphtheria and 1,190 smallpox. Gonorrhea headed the list of contagious diseases reported last year with a total of 131 cases to its credit. There were 101 measles cases, 130 syphilis, and 65 scarlet fever. Hundreds of visits were made by the staff of the health depart ment caring for maternity and infancy cases. Forty persons were admitted to the birth control ser vice during the 12 months. Over 7,215 school children of the county were inspected by the staff of the department. Venereal diseases headed the lists of clinic visits by patients during the past year as over 10,- THE ELKIN TRIBUNE. ELKIN. NORTH CAROLINA 250 visits were made by persons suffering from the diseases. Total detention notices served by the department amounted to 22. Tuberculosis treatment is one of the major problems of the county health departments as re vealed by the figures on tubercu losis work. There were 798 ad mitted for service, 104 admitted to nursing service, 791 physical examinations, 806 X-ray examin ations, a total of 943 clinic visits, and 28 persons were admitted to sanatorium^. Syphilis specimens headed all others made by the department last year which included *7l wa ter, 217 milk, 788 gonorrhea, 2796 syphilis, 31 tuberculosis, and others which totaled less than 50 each. , General sanitation work amounted to ft, larger proportion of the work than any year prev ious by the Surry department. Slaughtering cows under super vision of the sanitary division of the health department service netted 1024 cows for Surry coun ty food in perfect condition last year. Officers of the department condemned eight cows' carcasses and refused permission to sell. In closing the report officers of the office traveled 20,887 miles, spent 3,686 hours in the office, and 4,115 hours in the field. Over 2,300 bulletins and posters were distributed during the year. Growing year by year, the Sur ry Health Department is already considering enlarging its quar ters over the City Hall, but no plans have been announced.
