DafeCafiHsqi^- . Author of "How to Win Friend* and Influence People*" m Here's a story of a woman who overnight learned that she had to earn the family income and who, in a few weeks, got herself a job at $30,000 a year! That woman Is Marie Beynon Ray, author of "Two Lifetimes in One." Mrs. Ray was married, and along came a child. Suddenly her husband became ill, and had to give up work for an indefinite period. This meant that Mrs. Ray would have to go out and get a job. But she did not make the mistake so many job-seekers do. She did not go at it higgly-piggly. She would offer a prospective employer these two things: an idea by which he could make money; and herself as a means of putting that idea over. Tills was excellent reason ing. The things she knew most about were fashions and adver tising, and she decided to capital ize on this knowledge. She had been managing editor of Vogue Magazine, where she had trained in caption writing four persons who became famous in the world of fashion: Marjorie Hillis, Claudia Cranston, Dorothy Park- THE ELKIN TRIBUNE. ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA er, and Grace Hegger (Sinclair Lewis' first wife). In doing this fashion work she had formed a wide circle of ac quaintances, and now she decided to make use of these people. She went to them and asked if they knew where there was a Job which needed the sort of experi ence and knowledge she possess ed. At an advertising agency she was told that the Wodworth Cos metics Company was reorganiz ing. She put her idea into opera tion. She learned all she could about the company, and what its problems were. She found that they wanted to re-package and get up an entirely new and dif ferent line—to modernize. She got to work. She designed new and attractive boxes, new perfume bottles, new face cream jars. She even laid out an adver tising campaign. She did not stop here; she also worked out a radio campaign.* Then she went before the board. She told her story. The men listened. Their eyes opened. They gasped with astonishment. Why, here was a' woman who knew more about this business than they did! Why not have a woman for vice-president? They appealing to women. Here was one with excellent ideas, why not hire her? They did! She made an excellent vice president. She thought of things the men had not thought of. The business boomed. In the mean time, her husband's health im proved and he came home. Mrs. Ray wanted to be with her daughter, aftd gave up her job, and turned writer. Anyone can learn from Mrs. Ray's experience. Don't walk in cold from the street. If you will think up an idea by which a company can make money, and sell the idea along with yourself, the job will want you. Want you? Why, it'll grab you!
