Thursday, March 14. 1940 COMMITTEE HAS FIRSTJEETING Planning and Advisory Group Was Organized First of This Year J. W. COMER PRESIDES Monday night, March 4, at Dobson. the Planning and Ad visory Committee for the Profes sional and Service Division of WPA held its first regular quar terly meeting of the year. The organization was set up around the first of the year for the pur pose of working with the Profes sional and Service Division to the planning, promotion, and better interpretation of a program of projects for this division to better meet the needs of each individual community. The committee is made up of representative citizens from each community in Surry county. The meeting was presided over by John Comer, chairman. A brief report and displays of the activi ties of each type project now be ing operated was given by the county project supervisors, and questions from committee mem bers on any phase of the work. Phillips, of Southern Pines, above, has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to Congress from the Eighth Congressional dis trict. Mr. Phillips is a sales man and forma- newspaper man. Rural Families Get Medical Under Prog Rural families in Surry and Yadkin counties who had receiv ed loans from the local Farm Se curity Administration office are participants in the recently es tablished medical "care program | for low-income farm families, according to Unda L. Bailey, Farm Security Administration home supervisor. Miss Bailey stated that these loans administered to the same manner as those for fertilizer, seed, stock and home needs will average about $15.00 yearly per family. This medical service went into effect on the first of February, it was reported. The medical care program which was indorsed by the Sur ry and Yadkin Medical Society at its September meeting has shown considerable interest, and final plans were made to get the work underway at a recent meeting of the advisory committee and FSA officials. According to the arrangements of the program, each family will have the privilege of choosing any physician who is a member of the Medical Society. The bills will be paid each month by the trustee. The Advisory Committee appointed by the Medical Society will determine the fairness of the bills. The Advisory Committee con sists of Dr. Henry Allen Brandon, Yadkinville, Dr. Hugh Parks, of Elkin, and Dr. R. E. Smith, of Mt. Airy. Mr. Herman Coe, assistant cashier of Surry County Loan and Trust Company, is the trus tee for the Medical Care program. STATE ROAD Mr. and Mrs. Ted Messick and McCree Gentry, of Winston-Sa lem, spent the week-end with their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Gentry. Those attending the funeral of Mrs. Betty Jane Cockerham at [Mountain Park Saturday were [Mrs. Leota Cockerham, Mrs. Ida Burch, Mr. and Mrs. Clete Jen kins, Mrs. Nan Dickerson, Mrs. Emma Walters, Mrs. W. L. Hanes, Mrs. W. H. Combs and Mrs. Alice Hicks. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hutchens and mother, Mrs. Hutchens, of Winston-Salem, visited their sis ter and daughter, Mrs. L. L. Irvin and family Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Clete Jenkins and children, Leon and Loreta, visited relatives at Hays Sunday. Miss Stella Gentry, of Boon ville, is erecting a new home on her farm near Mt. Hebron M. E. church, which she and her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Gentry, expect to occupy after its comple tion. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Barbour, of Elkin, were among those visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Combs Sunday. Mr. Combs remains Quite ill at his home here. Mr. Collins has been in declining health for several months, and for the past few days his condition has grown much worse. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Snow were the Sunday guests of Mr. Snow's brother, Mr. Arlie Snow, and Mrs. Snow, of Boonvllle. Little Miss Dixie Leigh Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Adams, had the , misfortune to have her finger badly .crushed the past week. The small son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles King received a badly cut forehead from a fall the past week which required several stitches. We are glad to state that Mrs. Pernie Procter, who has been very ill the past week, shows some im provement. Mrs. Leonard Holleman and children, of Hanes, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Hol comb, Sunday. There will be a birthday dinner given in honor of Mrs. Nancy Wid Shore at her home here with her daughter, Mrs. Harrison Tucker, Sunday, April 7.
