Kathryn, to Clyde Wesley Rudd
of Henderson. The marriage will

Jacfcson-Lucas Marriage Is
Solemnized Monday
Miss Lillian May Jackson, of
Winston-Salem, daughter of Mrs.
Selina Jackson, and Jesse Ran
dolph Lucas, of Elkin and Roan
oke, were married Monday after
noon at Independence, Va., with
Rev. L. F. Funk officiating.
Mr. Lucas is employed with the
Yadkin Auto Sales company
here.
T. C. U. Club to Sponsor Dance
The T. C. U. club will sponsor
a public dance at the school
gymnasium Friday evening, April
5. Claude Little and his orches
tra from Mooresville will furnish
music for the dance, which will
begin at 9 o'clock. Proceeds will
go to the welfare fund of the
club.
Bids for the dance may be se
cured from Leonard Shepherd,
chairman of the social committee
of the club.

day school annex of the church
Tuesday evening to honor the

ment who have recently come here
from Winston-Salem to reside.

Jack Terrell, Mrs. Jake Jones and
Miss Angess Gray.
Approximately 110 young people
attended the delightful affair.
Miss Laffoon is Hostess at
Dinner and Theatre Party
Miss Louise Laffoon delightfully
entertained members of the T. and
T. club at a dinner party at her
home on Church Street Tuesday
evening. Spring flowers were
used throughout the home and as
a centerpiece for the dinner table.
In addition to the regular club
meeting date the event also mark
ed the birthday anniversary of the
hostess.
Following the dinner the guests
were entertained at a theatre
party.
Woman's Club to Hold Open
Meet Tuesday Afternoon
The regular open meeting of
the Woman's club will be held
Tuesday afternoon, April 2, at
3:30 in the club room at Hotel
Elkin. The program will be in
charge of the Garden depart
ment of the club, under the direc
tion of Miss Alice Dixon, and will
feature a talk on Chinese flora,
by Mi's. Eph Whisenhunt, and a
musical program under the direc
tion of Mrs. J. H. Beeson.
All members are urged to at
tend and the public is cordially

Methodist Circles to Meet
Monday
The circles of the Woman's So
ciety of Christian Service of the
Methodist church will meet Mon
day afternoon, April 1, at 3:30 in
the following homes:
Circle number one with Mrs. R.
B. Harrell on West Main street;
number two with Mrs. G. P.
Dockery on Bridge street, with
Mrs. Worth Graham associate
hostess, and number three with
Mrs. J. R. Poindexter on Bridge
street.

Cox-Melton Wedding Is
Solemnized
The wedding of Miss Elenoir
Grace Melton and Wiley Cox was
solemnized Saturday, March 16,
at high noon at the home of the
officiating minister, the Rev. J.
W. Calloway, of Mountain Park.
Mrs. Cox is the second daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Job
Melton, of Jonesville, Route 1.
She is a graduate of Ronda high
school, being a member of the
class of 1938.
Mr. Cox is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Cox, of Pleasant Hill. He is
connected with the City Transit
company at Elkin.
Holiday Visitors Are Feted at
Numerous Parties
Misses Virginia Whitaker,
Reeves Pollard and Algene Nelly,
of Winston-Salem, holiday guests
of Miss Dorothy Harrell, and Miss
Betty Messenger, of Hartford,
Conn., guest of her aunts, Mes
dames Raymond and Alex Chat
ham. were extensively feted dur
ing their visit.
On Saturday Mrs. Gavin
Dortch, aunt of Miss Harrell, en
tertained the visitors at luncheon
at Hotel Elkin. The guests were
later entertained at the Dortch
home for games.
On Saturday evening Miss Har
rell entertained at a dinner at
6:30 at her home on West Main
street for the visitors and a num
ber of young men from Winston-
Salem. At eight o'clock several
additional guests came in for
dancing, in a dancing exhibition
contest Miss Jo Barker was
awarded a prize, a white rabbit,
dressed in gay Easter finery.
Monday Miss Harrell entertain
ed at a luncheon at one o'clock at
her home. Covers were placed
for sixteen, members of the high
school and college set. Table
prizes were awarded at the lunch
eon to Misses Algene Neely, Clyde,
Myers, Jo Barker and Lena Sale.
On Monday evening Miss Mary
Elizabeth Allen entertained the
visitors at a buffet luncheon at
her home on Church street.
Miss Day Is Bride of Russell

In the living room an impro
vised altar was arranged with
greenery and spring flowers.
Miss Bernice Wellborn rendered
the wedding music. The tradi
tional wedding marches were used
as a processional and recessional
and during , the ceremony Miss
Wellborn played "O, Promse Me."
The bride wore a spring suit of
poudre blue with accessories of
dusty rose and black. Her shoul
der bouquet was of white carna
tions and valley lilies.
Following the ceremony the
guests were directed to the dining
room by Misses Marie Casey and
Gerfcha Collins and Mrs. Joe
Cockerham, Where a handsome
two-tier wedding cake was sliced
and served with moulded ices.
Mrs. Casey is the only daughter
of Rev. and Mrs. Day and was
graduated from Elkin high school
with the class of 1938. Mr. Casey
is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Young Casey of the Cool Springs
community. He is employed with
the Federal Furniture company.
At present Mr. and Mrs. Day
are making their home with the
bride's parents.

Miss Sadie Mathis Is Bride of
Felix Swaim
Miss Sadie Ailene Mathis be
came the bride of Felix Swaim at
the home 'of her parents in the
Bethel community last Sunday
morning at 10 o'clock. The pas
tor of the bride, Rev. R. J. Par
due, heard the vows, using the
ring ceremony.
The bride wore a costume of
navy blue with matching acces
sories. Her shoulder corsage was
of sweet peas and valley lilies.
Mrs. Swaim is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joel Franklin
Mathis, of Route 1, Jonesville.
She was graduated with the class
of 1938 of Ronda high school, and
for some time has held a posi
tion with Rose's store at Elkin.
Mr. Swaim is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. H. L. Swaim, of Cycle.
He attended school at Jonesville
and is engaged in farming with
his parents, where they will re
side.

Parent-Teachers Hear Lecture
and Elect Officers
Members of the Parent-Teach
er Association heard a lecture by
the Rt. Rev. Douglas L. Rights, of
Winston-Salem, observed Father's
Night and elected officers at the
March meeting Tuesday evening
in the elementary school building.
The meeting opened with the
devotional period in charge of
Rev. J. S. Hiatt, and the speaker
of the evening was introduced by
Prof. z. H. Dixon, former super
intendent of the city schools. The
Rev. Mr. Rights gave an illustrat
ed lecture on a tour of the Yad
kin and Great Pee Dee river,
which was informative and of
more than usual interest, as
many of the scenes were laid in
the valley of the Yadkin in this
vicinity. The pictures were in
natural color.
During the business meeting
officers were elected as follows to
serve for the 1940-41 school term:
President, Mrs. J. Harold Click;
vice-president, Mrs. J. Mark Mc-
Adams; secretary. Miss Emma
Cooke, and treasurer, Miss Minnie
Ruth McNeill. Routine reports
and other business was dispatch
ed. Mrs. I. C. Yates, chairman of
the pre-school clinic, announced
that the local group had received
a certificate of recognition from
the National Congress of P.-T. A.
for the outstanding work in this
line.
During a soci%l hour the hos
pitality committee, composed of
Mrs. E. F. McNeer, Mrs. T. A.
Leeper and Mrs. E. G. Click,
served punch and wafers. A vocal
quartette, "April Eyes," by Meg
dames E. G. Click, E. F. McNeer,
J. H. Beeson and H. P. Graham,
accompanied at the piano by Mrs.
J. Mark McAdams, was also en
joyed.
Attendance awards went to
Miss Betty Harris' fifth grade in
the elementary school and Miss
Alice Dixon's eleventh grade in
the high school.
