WATER SYSTEM FIGURES GIVEN Cost of Adequate Water and Sewer System for Jones ville About $140,000 DETAILS ARE GIVEN Facts relative to the proposed water and sewer system for the town of Jonesville, have been an nounced by Mayor Z. B. Martin, of that city. According to figures announced, the total cost of the entire project, - including water and sewer system, will amount to $140,213.42, of which the federal contribution, in cluding labor and cash, will a mount to $91,199.90, leaving Jones ville $49,013.52 to pay. It is contemplated, Mayor Mar tin has announced, that the fed eral government will purchase bonds of the Town of Jonesville in the sum of $50,000, bearing in terest at the rate of 4 per cent, payable in 30 annual installments. It is also pointed out that by providing an adequate water sys tem for fire protection, the people of Jonesville can realize a reduc tion of approximately 15 per cent in the fire insurance rates, which will mean a savings of some $3,000 yearly. Mrs. Folger Cockerham, home improvement leader, and Mrs. Allan Kinzie, chairman of Better Homes Week, are sponsoring a Home Improve ment and Home Beautification contest in the Mountain Park club which will close on April 30. The contest is open to anyone re siding in the radius of the Moun tain Park club. Entrance into the contest does not necessarily mean a lot of money will have to be spent, as in addition to things bought for the home, things made for the home are included, also the re arrangement of furniture, repair ing the home inside and out, general housecleaning, removing outside rubbish and planting na tive shrubs and flowers. A number of useful and beau tiful prizes have been donated by Elkin business firms and these will be awarded winners in the contest. Anyone desiring to en ter is asked to notify either Mrs. Allan Kinzie or Mrs. Folger Cock erham before April 4, which is the closing date for entrants. If you do not plan to enter encourage your neighbor to enter and make this a worthwhile community project and points will be given for aiding your neighbors in the contest. The juniors entertained the seniors at a lovely banquet Friday night at 8 o'clock in the recrea tion room at the gymnasium. The theme, "In the Garden of To morrow," was carried out in the beautiful decorations pertaining to Easter. Talks were made by John W. Comer, superintendent, J. Sam Gentry, principal, and Kyle Thompson, member of the school committee. And if those pictured will call at The Tribune office in person, they will be given two tickets each, good for admission to either the Lyric or Elk theatres. The junior president, Billy Dick erson, welcomed the guests. Polly Shores sang a song, "Only a Rose." Constance Greenwood, of Elkin, tap danced, accompanied on the piano by Dorothy Colhard, of Elkin. The banquet was concluded with a grand march in the gym nasium, with about 100 students taking part. The seniors gave a party in the Home Demonstration club room Wednesday, March 13. Numerous games and contests were enjoy ed. Punch, fruit salad and cakes were served to the following: Emma Jane Linville, Ruth Nixon, Alice Thompson, Pauline Cocker ham, Annie Lee Harris, Lois Southard, Hilda Lee Heatwole and Thelma Whitley, Mrs. Ger trude Whitehead, Edd Beane, Charles Swift, Kent Haynes, Fred ' Cooper, Jack Swift, Kemp Lewis and Vern Smith. Work has begun on the annual, "Sylvan Memories," which is to I be published this year. Miss Ethel Saylor, of National ! Business College, Roanoke, Va., spent the week-end With her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Saylor. Messrs. Clark Cockerham and Paul Calloway, of Chapel Hill, are visiting their respective parents. Misses Margaret, Mattie Lee and Joe Bill Miles, of Mulberry, were the week-end guests of Miss Dorothy Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris had as their week-end guests Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Darnell, of Elkin. We are sorry to learn that Lewellyn Gentry is very sick at this time. PLEASANT HILL Miss Irene Day entertained members of the F. H. C. class of the Sunday school of Pleasant Hill Baptist church at the regu lar business-social meeting Thurs day evening at her home. During the social hour of the meeting the announcement of the engagement and approaching' marriage of the hostess was made. Miss Mozelle Darnell, class president, presided over the meet ing and Miss Vermelle Money opened the meeting with a scrip ture reading followed by prayer by Miss Bernice Wellborn. s Rou tine business was dispatched dur ing the business session. The social meeting was in the form of an Irish party and a number of games and contests were enjoyed, with prizes being awarded the winners. A number of Irish songs were sung, with Miss Bernice Wellborn playing the piano accompaniments. In the dining room, where the guests were invited for refresh j ments, bridal green and white [were used in the decorations. A salad course and a sweet course were served., The plates were adorned with cards bearing the inscription "Irene-Russell, Satur day, 4 p.m." which announced the engagement ana approaching marriage of the hostess to Russe.'l Casey. Twenty guests enjoyed the hos pitality of Miss Day. Mrs. Clarence Darnell and chil dren, Francis and Gray spent the week-end at Moutain Park as the guests of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Lyons and family were the Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lyons of Little Elkin. Mr. William Lyons from the U. S. The wea ther resembled Christmas more than the sunny day we had ex pected the previous Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Gilliam and family were the dinner guests of Mrs. Gilliam's brother and fam ily last Sunday, Mr. T. T. Harris, of Jonesvillg. The students who attend school at Ronda did not have a holiday for Easter Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Myers and little daughter, Carolyn, are visit ing the former's uncle and family of Clingman for a few days, Mr. Wade Green. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Jones had as their guests for Easter, her brother, Mr. C. W. Gilliam, and Mrs. Gilliam and children, Char lie and Mary. Mrs. Josie Key, of near Roar ing River, has moved to her for mer home near here, the Godfrey place, since the passing of her 1 husband several weeks ago. Fifty-one daily newspapers in this country failed in business last year and an uncounted num ber of small magazines. Thursday.
