®SOC* ETY. Warn M m Reid-Motsinger Rites Announced Of Interest to friends of the bride here, where she has fre quently visited, is the following announcement: "Mr and Mrs. M. E. Motsinger of Winston-Salem annnounce the marriage of their daughter, Myrtle Chatham, to John Calvin Reid, on Wednesday, April 17. Mr. and Mrs. Reid will make their home at Bartlesville, Okla., after May 1." Mrs. Smith Is Hostess to Club Wednesday Mrs. R. G. Smith entertained members of her bridge club and a few visitors at a delightful bridge-luncheon Wednesday at her home on Gwyn avenue. The home was attractively arranged with bowls of apple blossoms and lilacs. Bridge was played at two tables in the morning and lunch eon was served at one o'clock. The club award for high score in the progressions went to Mrs. A. O. Bryan and the visitor's prize to Mrs. R. M. Ogburn. Caudill directed the program, using as her subject, "The Home and Christian Education." - During the business session Mrs. O. T. Blackburn and Mrs. J. M. Hanks were named as dele gates to the Presbyterial in Lex ington. Mrs. H. C. Graham Fetes Bride-Elect Tuesday Honoring Miss Lucile Cox, who has been extensively feted since the announcement of her engage merit, Mrs. H. C. Graham enter tained at a lovely luncheon Tues day at her home on Terrace Ave nue. The home was attractively ar ranged with white lilacs and tulips and the same flowers were used as a centerpiece for the luncheon table, where covers were placed for eight. Miss Cox's gift from the hostess was goblets in her pattern of crystal. Workers Conference of Church Meets at Wellborn Home The Workers Conference of the Presbyterian church met at the home of Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Wellborn on Bridge street Mon day evening in a business session. During the evening work of the church was discussed and plans made for the daily vacation Bible school of the church which will begin on May 27. The work of the Sunday school and young people's department of the church was also discussed. Dr. W. R. Wellborn was named as a representative to the Pres bytery in Winston-Salem, on April 23. Other routine business was dispatched. Mrs. Sagar Honors Bride-Elect at Breakfast Honoring Miss . Lucile Cox, bride-elect of the week, Mrs. John Sagar entertained at a de lightful breakfast and kitchen shower Saturday morning at her home on Hospital Road. The home throughout was artistically arranged with bowls of lilacs and tulips and the four small tables, where the guests were seated, were centered with bouquets of pansies. Miss Cox was presented a love ly array of gifts. The guest list included sixteen. Out-of-town guests were: Misses Frances Smith and fillla Ogburn, both of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bivins Fetes Bridal Party , at Tea Wednesday Honoring Miss Lucille Cox, bride-elect of Saturday, and mem bers of her bridal party, Mrs. Joe Bivins entertained at an in formal tea Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock at her home on Gwyn Avenue. The tea table was overlaid with an imported cloth of delicate em broidery and centered with a bou quet of pink tulips and lily-of-the valley. Favors were miniature gold slippers. Guests were Miss Cox, bride elect, Miss Louise Grier, who will serve as maid of honor at the wedding, Misses Emalene Neaves, Sarah Kelley Lillard, Dorothy Halsey and Lesbia Graham, who will be bridesmaids, Mrs. W. C. Cox, mother of the bride-elect, Mrs. W. A. Neaves, Mrs. H. P. Graham, Mrs. Herman F. Duncan and Mrs. Franklin Folger. Miss Cox was presented crystal in her wedding pattern. ■■ t Parent-Teachers in Final Meet of Year The final meeting of the year of the Parent-Teacher Associa tion was held at the elementary school Tuesday afternoon, with a splendid attendance. The meeting opened with the Lord's Prayer, in unison, by the assem blage. The program featured two in teresting speakers, Dr. Ghas. L. Haywood, Jr., and Earl M. Hodel. Dr. Haywood spoke on cancer, which is now the subject of in tensive study by the medical pro fession. Dr. Haywood gave a splendid discussion on the causes of cancer, its spread through the body and the methods of treat ment. Mr. Hodel, who is known throughout the state for his in terest in birds, spoke on North Carolina birds, their preservation and care. Both talks were highly enjoyed. During the business session final reports of the year were given, which were most gratify ing. Mrs, Harold Click, presi dent-elect of the association, gave a report of the State Con gress of Parent-Teachers in High Point, fchich she attended last week. Mr. Greenwood is a candidate for nomination to the Surry board of commissioners on the Republican ticket, having been the first to file for this job in the current race. Barker's eighth grade and Miss Alice Dixon's senior class tied for the award. Miss Cockerham Is Honored at Farewell Party A delightful courtesy to Miss Estelle Cockerham, who left Wed nesday for Washington, D. C., to reside, was the party given at the home of Mrs. Fred Harris on West Main street Tuesday even ing by members of the Dorcas class of the Sunday school of the First Baptist church, which she has been serving as teacher for some time. The party was doubly significant, as it also honored Miss Cockerham on her birthday anniversary. The living room, library and dining room were elaborately ar ranged with bowls of purple lilacs and white narcissi, effecting a color scheme of purple and white. A number of games and con tests were enjoyed and Miss Cockerham was presented a love ly array of gifts. Twenty-eight members of the class and three visitors, Mrs. Carl Shore, of Yadkinville, Mrs. P. M. Poore, of Mt. Airy, and Mrs. P. D. Pegram, of Roanoke, Va., sisters of Miss Cockerham, enjoyed the event. The hospitality committee was headed by Mrs. Harvey Baker, chairman. Engagement of Miss Lillard and Mr. Dillon is Announced Outstanding among the social events of the week was the in formal tea given Tuesday after noon at 4 o'clock by Mrs. John Sagar at her home on Hospital Road, to announce the engage ment and approaching marriage of her sister, Miss Carolyn Lillard to vin W. Dillon, Jr., the wedding to take place next month. The living room and den were decorated with bowls of dogwood blossoms, tulips and pansles. In the dining room bridal green and white were used. The tea .table was centered with a bouquet of white lilacs and narcissi and on either end of the table were white candles in crystal holders, tied witn bows of white tulle. The announcement was made from a card resting against a miniature bride and bridegroom, bearing the inscription, "Carolyn-Van, May 30". Tea was served buffet style with Mrs. Fred Hobson of Yad kinville, presiding at the table. The guest list included twenty five. Mrs. Ben Campen of Red Springs, cousin of the hostess and bride-elect, was the only out-of town guest. Miss Lillard is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Lillard, and Mr. Dillon is the son of Van W.
