STAFF MEMBERS ENJOY BANQUET ■ Chatham Blanketeer Person nel Hold Get-Together at Hotel Elkin PAPER SHOWS PROGRESS Members of the staff of The Chatham Blanketeer, house or gan of the Chatham Manufactur ing Company, were guests at a banquet at Hotel Elkin Tuesday evening. Miss Claudia Austin, editor-in-chief of the paper, was master of ceremonies. About forty persons were present, being present and former members of the staff of the paper. Interesting and constructive talks were made by C. C. Poin dexter, C. J. Hyslup, Walter Bur giss, Russell Burcham and others. The main objective was a bigger and better publication and Miss Austin stated that everyone was well pleased with the progress of the paper since it was started in 1933. Each member of the staff was introduced. During the meeting it was an nounced that 75 young men from State College at Raleigh would make a tour of the mill today (Thursday). H. F. Laffoon, business man ager of the Elk Printing Com pany, printers of the Blanketeer, was a guest at the meeting. Only Furnish Food City Visitor —So you raise all these chickens yourself? Davis Sylvia Shoe Lawrence BUSK WOMAN PASSES AWAY (Continued from page one) Surry county, and a daughter of J. S. Layne of Rusk and the late Mrs. Layne. She was twice mar ried, first to Emmitt Snow and after his death to Charles C. Humphries, who survives with one child of the first marriage, Mrs. Marie Chandler, of Rusk, and 3 children of the second marriage, Ralph, Robert and Bessie Jane Humphries. Her father, J. S. Layne, one sister, Mrs. L. E. Cock erham of Elkin, three half-sisters, Mrs. Chas. Corder of Rusk; Mrs. Walter Corder of Fairview, and Mrs. Hubert Evans of Jonesville, and two half brothers, Felix Layne of Elkin and Allan Layne of Dob son also survive. Mrs. Humphries had been a member of the Little Richmond Baptist church for the past 30 years and was active in the work of the church and Sunday school. She was a woman greatly beloved in her community. Funeral services will be held this morning (Thursday) at 10 o'clock at Little Richmond Bap tist church. The rites will be in charge of Rev. A. B. Hayes, pas tor of the church, assisted by Rev. Lester Johnson, Rev. T. S. Draughan and Rev. R. E. Adams. Interment will be in the church graveyard. WALL'S TO GIVE AWAY TWO WATCHES W. M. Wall, local jewelry store, is in this issue of The Tribune announcing their annual gift of two handsome watches which will be awarded to two lucky mem bers of the Elkin and Jonesville graduating classes. A large clock has been install ed in a show window, upon which members of the two graduating classes are invited to inscribe their names. When the clock runs down, the names pointed to by the hands of the clock will be winners of the watches. All graduates of these two schools are urged to visit Wall's now and have their names put on the clock. McDANIEL'S OFFERING FREE TRIP TO FAIR McDaniels Department Store is announcing a free trip to the New York World's Fair, with three days in New York, which will be awarded by the store on Monday, June 10. This free trip will include trans portation to New York and return, and pays practically all other ex peneses other than for meals. Complete details may be obtain ed by.calling at the store. It is not necessary to buy anything to be eligible to participate, it was said. MUSICAL PROGRAM IS ENJOYED BY KIWANIS Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dickman and two members of the high school band gave a musical pro gram at the weekly dinner meet ing of the Kiwanis club at Hotel Elkin Thursday evening. The meeting this week will be held on Friday evening instead of Thursday and members of the senior classes of Elkin and Jones ville schools will be guests of the Kiwanians. J. T. Reece, of Yad kinville, well known educator and formerly superintendent of Yad kin county schools, will be guest speaker for the meeting. JURY FINDS SCHOOL BUSES NEED REPAIRS The Surry county grand jury, in its report to Judge Q. V. Nim ocks last week, expressed the usual concern over the dirty, un kept condition of the county courthouse, and announced that an inspection of the county school buses disclosed that out of 38, only 13 were in first class condition. The others were said to have bad brakes, window glass out, faulty steering gear, and other defects. Nearly 50% of the 839 fatal ac cidents on highways of this state last year occurred on straight stretches. Prof. Albert Martin, yesterday, furnished The Tribune with a complete program of the commencement exercises. Beginning Sunday night, May sth, at 8 o'clock, Rev. J. S. Hiatt, superintendent of the Elkin dis trict of the Methodist church, will deliver the commencement sermon. Ne I on the program will be Friday night, May 10, at 8 o'clock when the class day ex ercises will be held in the form of a play, "Southern Rosary." Miss Bernice Bangle will deliver the valedictory, and Miss Violet Wolfe will deliver the salutatory. Saturday morning at 11 o'clock the annual address will be deliv ered by Attorney J. H.
