Death Claims Aged Wilkes County Wom Mrs. Lucinda Riley Swift, 92, a native of Wilkes county, but for many years a resident of the State Road community, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. S. L. McNail. in Winston-Salem, with whom she had resided for 8 years. „ Mrs. Swift was the daughter of the late Mrs. John Riley. She was twice married, first to J. D. York, and after his death to Walsh Swift. Both husbands and two children of her first mar riage preceded her in death. Mrs. Swift was a member of Grassy Creek Methodist church, near Elian, and during her resi dence in this section made a host of friends who mourn her pass ing. She had been in declining health for several months but her condition was critical only a week before her passing. She is survived by two step sons, J. A. Swift and J. S. Swift, of State Road, four grandsons and four granddaughters. Funeral services were held Fri day afternoon from Pleasant Ridge Baptist church in Siury county. The rites were in charge of Rev. L. B. Murray. Grandsons and great-grandsons of the de ceased were pallbearers. TO OPEN MEETING FOR NOMINATIONS The weekly meetings of the Junior order on Friday evening May 10 and May 17, will be open for the nomination of officers to serve for the coming six months. Election of officers will be held on May 24. At the meeting Friday evening of this week a safety driving cam paign will be the feature of the meeting. All members are urged to at tend. A beautiful birthday cake with candles was the central decoration. Miss Dar nell's close friends were the only guests. The P. H. C. class of Pleasant Hill church held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Joseph Cockerham, Thurs day, April 25. The business of the class was transacted in the forepart of the meeting, with Miss Mozelle Darnell presiding. The meeting was then turned over to the chairman of the pro gram committee, Mrs. Russell Casey. An Interesting debate was given by selected members of the class on the question, Resolved: The Radio is a down pull to our country from the religious stand point. Affirmative, Anna Laura Ray and Gertha Collins; nega tive, Ruth Ray and Gladys Tran sou. Judges were also members of the class. At the latter part of the meeting a social hour was enjoyed. Delightful refreshments were served to the twenty mem bers present. Games were played with Anna Laura Ray and Mrs. Russell Casey winning prizes. The W. M. U. of the Pleasant Hill Baptist church met Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Robert Wilmoth, with eleven members present. Mrs. Grace Eads, assistant leader, presided over the meeting. The hymn for the year, "How Firm a Foundation," was sung for the opening song which was followed by prayer by Mrs. A. W. Wood. Only routine reports were heard. Mrs. Jack Smoot was in charge of the program. Mrs. Robert Wilmoth read the scripture. Others assisting with the pro gram were Mrs. A. W. Wood and Mrs. Grace Eads. Mrs. C. R. D>arnell closed the meeting with prayer. Spencer Norman, mechanic for Davis' garage here, was painfully injured Saturday afternoon when a piece of an emery wheel broke off while he was grinding down a piece of steel and lodged in his eye. He received treatment at a local medical office. Miss Fannie Poindexter of Winston-Salem, is spending a few days with Mrs. Mamie Butner. Mr. Tom Martin .has returned from Charlotte, where he spent several days visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Buford Kirkman and family of Pilot Mountain, were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. R. CYCLE WOMAN PASSES AT HER HOME SUNDAY Mrs. Sarah Meiinda Stokes, 43, wife of Luther Stokes of the Cycle community died suddenly at her home Sunday night from a para lytic stroke. She was a daughter of Mrs. Margaret Turner Stokes, and the late Richard Stokes and a member of the Oak Grove Bap tist church. She is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. Reece Hudspeth, Mrs. Waverlin Pinnix and Velmer Stokes, and her mother, all of Cycle.
