George Royall attended the an nual convention of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Associa tion in Charlotte last week. Mrs. Charles L. Haywood, Jr., and children, Peggy and Charles, left Monday for a visit of three weeks with relatives in Short Hills, New Jersey. Mr. and Mrs. Clark Myers and twin sons, Phil and Wally, of Atlanta, were the guests of friends here during the week end. Mrs. J. H. Beeson and son, John Edward, will leave today for a stay of a month at Delray Beach and Jacksonville, Fla., and Vidalia and Savannah, Ga. Mrs. C. B. Luther Reeves and daughter, Miss Eileen Reeves, of Visalia, Calif., are visiting relatives in and near Elkin. Mr. Reeves is a na tive of this section, but has been residing in California for a num ber of years. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Fitzgerald and little daughter, Becky, of Winston-Salem, and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Billingsley and son, Billy, of Rogers, Ark., were Sun day guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Byrd. Glenn Lewis, assistant manager of the local J. C. Penney store, left Sunday for Lynchburg, Va., where he will take a five-day course in window decorating con ducted by the Penney company. Miss Mary Sale, who has been a student at Montreat College, Montreat, during the past year, has arrived to spend the summer with her mother, Mrs. W. S. Sale, at her home on Bridge street. Mr. and Mrs. C. I. Boger had as their guests Sunday at their home on West Main street Mr. and Mrs. Ruffin Samuels and daughter, Betty Jean, of High Point. Betty Jean Samuels re mained for a visit of a week. Frank Walker and Bill Reece, students at Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, have arrived to spend the summer vacation here with their respective parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Walker and Mr. and F. Reece. Miss Nancy Click, who has served as dietitian at the North Carolina School for the Deaf at Morganton for the school term, has arrived to spend the summer with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. E. G. Myers will leave Friday for Raleigh, to at tend the commencement exer cises at Meredith College. Their daughter, Miss Amy Kathryn Myers, will receive her A. B. de gree at the graduating exercises on Monday. They will be accom panied home by Miss Myers. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Eldridge, of Glade Valley, and Miss Florence Eldridge, of this city, spent the early part of the week in Red Springs, attending the gradua tion exercises at Flora McDonald College. Miss Evon Eldridge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. El dridge, was a member of the graduating class. Miss Regina Meed, of this city, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Meed, has accepted a regular as sistantship at Brown University, Providence, R. 1., with the field of concentration either in genetics or comparative anatomy. The offer includes a year's work in the laboratory and courses lead ing to a master's degree, yrith all tuition fees ,and S4OO in cash. Miss Meed will be graduated from Western College, Oxford, Ohio* in June. The many friends of Miss Net tie Hinshaw will be glad to know that she is resting as well as could be expected at a Statesville hospital, where she underwent a major operation on Monday of this week. Mrs. F. H. Bobbitt, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jones and Miss Betty Jones, all of Inverness, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Numa Causey, of Lincolnton, will arrive Saturday for a week-end visit with Mrs. R. G. Wil moth and Graham Reich, all of Winston-Salem, were here Sun day visiting their father, W. S. Reich, at his home on Vine street, and their sister, Mrs. Alden Hunt, who is a patient at the local hos pital. Friends of Mrs. Hunt will be glad to know that she is much improved. Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Holcomb, of Jonesville, and Mrs. Holcomb's mother and niece, Mrs. W. E. Macey and Miss Lucille Macey, of Hamptonville, spent the week end in Martinsville, Va., the guests of relatives, and attended the commencement exercises at -the Martinsville school. Mrs. Macey remained for a visit of several weeks. L. I. Wade, Jr., of this city, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. I Wade, Sr., and a graduate student at Duke University, Durham, has been awarded the Angier Duke Memor ial fellowship with a stipend of SI,OOO. Mr. Wade will continue the study of mathematics. The announcement was made Thurs day by Dean Calvin B. Hoover, of the Duke University graduate school of arts and .sciences. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. McNeill and daughters and son, Misses Minnie Ruth and Elizabeth and Bobby, attended the commencement ex ercises at Wake Forest College, Wake Forest, Monday where their son, Claude McNeill, Jr., was a member of the graduating class, receiving his B. S. degree. Mr. McNeill accompanied them home to spend the summer vacation. Next year he will continue his studies at Wake Forest Medical school. Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Norman and daughter and son, Glenda and Fred, and Miss Florence El dridge, of this city, and Miss Lillie Norman, of Dobson, attend ed the graduating exercises of the City Memorial School of Nursing in Winston-Sa lem Thursday evening. Miss Una Norman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman, was one of 16 members of the graduating class. The exercises were held at St. Paul's Episcopal church. Miss Norman had served as treasurer of her class during the four years of training. Mrs. Frankie Andrews, of At lanta, will arrive Friday for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. L. Benson, the latter her daughter, at their home on Hospital Road. On Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Ben son and daughter, Barbara, and Mrs. Andrews will go to Durham, to attend the. graduating exer cises at Duke University. The Bensons' daughter, Miss Idelia Benson, will be a member of the graduating class. The commence ment program will last from the first through the third of June. They will be accompanied home by Miss Idelia Benson, and an other daughter, Miss Frances Benson, also a student at Duke. Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Wellborn, of this city, accompanied by their daughter and * granddaughter, Mrs. Edwin Duncan and Jane Duncan, of Sparta, spent the 1 week-end in Charlotte, where they attended the wedding of Mrs. Wellborn's niece, Miss Mary Elizabeth Gillette, to Eugene Franz Hinson, which was solemn ized in a formal ceremony at the Second Presbyterian church in Charlotte Saturday. Mrs. Dim can served as one of the brides maids for her cousin's wedding and little Jane Duncan was one of the flower girls. Numerous games and contests were enjoyed during the evening with prizes going to Misses Ruby and Lucile Buelin and Jimmy Hanks. Mrs. Caudle, assisted by Mrs* Bill Davis and Mrs. O. T. Black bum, served punch and cakes to the 18 members present.
