Graham Fetes Brides At Party Thursday Misses Emalene Neaves and Caroline Lillard. brides-elect, shared honors Thursday at a buf fet-luncheon given by Mrs. H. C. Graham, at her home ?n Terrace Avenue. Roses and peonies were used in the appointments of the small tables, where covers were placed for sixteen. The dining room table was lovely with a cen terpiece of roses in bridal green and white. , Misses Neaves and Lillard were each presented a gift. Shelton-Lovett Marriage Is Announced Today Announcement is made today of the marriage of Miss Virginia Pauline Lovett and Henry Mar shall Shelton on May 11, 1940, at Chatham, Va. Rev. H. B. Hard away, pastor of the Chatham Baptist church, officiated. Mrs. Shelton is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Lovett, of near Jonesville, and Mr. Shelton is the son of H. C. Shelton, of Danville, Va., and the late Mrs. Shelton. Both are employed with Chatham Manufacturing com pany here. Mr. and Mrs. Shelton are at home temporarily with the bride's parents. Playmakers Club Honors Mrs. Meed Tuesday Mrs. Gilbert Meed, who will leave within a short time to make her home in Wheeling, W. Va., was honored with a dinner party Tuesday evening by members of the Playmakers club. Dinner was served in the private dining room of the Bon-Ton Grill. Cov ers were placed for twelve at a beautifully appointed table. Mrs. Meed was presented a shower of handkerchiefs from the guests. Mrs. E. F. McNeer Honors Miss Lillard and Mr. Dillon Mrs. E. F. McNefer entertained at a delightful dinner party at her home on Church street Fri day evening to honor Miss Caro line Lillard and Van W. Dillon, Jr., whose marriage will be sol emnized this evening. The guest list included only members of the choir of the Methodist church, and Mrs. Herman F. Duncan. Mixed garden flowers were used throughout the lovely home in kn attractive arrangement. Covers were placed for eighteen at small tables in the sun room. Following the dinner contests were enjoyed, with the prize go ing to Miss Josephine Paul. The honoree's gift from the hostess was a silver bon-bon dish. Mission Circles To Meet Monday Afternoon The circles of the Woman's So ciety of Christian Service of the Methodist church will meet Mon day afternoon at 3:30 in the fol lowing homes: Circle number one with Mrs. H. P. Graham, with Mrs. J. H. Han dy, associate hostess; number two with Mrs. R. C. Freeman, with Mrs. D. G. Smith, associate host ess, and number three with Mrs. M. R. Bailey. Circle number four will meet Thursday evening, June 6, with Mrs. E. Carl Boyles, with Mes dames J. Coke Marion and Clyde Hall, associate hostesses. All members are invited to at tend. Announcement of Marriage of Miss Reece and Mr. Lea Is Made Coming as a surprise to friends is the announcement by Mr. and Mrs. William Franklin Reece, of this city, of the marriage of their daughter, Hannah McCollis, to Peter Stokes Lea, son of the late Benjamin James Lea and Mrs. Lea, of Winston-Salem. The ceremony was performed June 24, 1939 at Raleigh. Mrs. Lea was a member of the junior class at Meredith College, Raleigh, at the time of her mar riage. Mr. Lea will graduate in June from North Carolina State College in Raleigh. He is a mem ber of the Kappa Phi Kappa na tional honorary fraternity. Mr. and Mrs. Lea will reside here during the summer. Sunshine Philathea Class Meets With Miss Martin The Sunshine-Philathea Class of the Sunday school of Elkin Valley Baptist church met Friday evening at the home of Miss Frances Martin, with nine mem bers present. Miss Martin con ducted the devotionals and Miss Grace Lawrence presided over the business session. Miss Lawrence also directed the program on "Prayer In Our Everyday Life," with each member present par ticipating in the discussion. The concluding number was a vocal trio by Misses Helen Hayes and Frances and Jean Martin, ac companied at the piano by Miss Marguerite Cockerham. Refreshments, consisting of punch, wafers and candy were served during a pleasant social hour. The Misses Atkinson Honor - Brides at Luncheon Honoring Miss Emalene Neaves, bride-elect of June, Miss Caroline Lillard. who will be married this evening, and Mrs. W. B. Harris, Jr., bride of last month, Misses Ruth and Anna Atkinson were hostesses at a lovely luncheon Saturday at their home on West Main street. The home was at tractively arranged throughout with bowls of roses and peonies. Covers were placed for thirty at small tables in the living room, hall and library. A beautifully appointed luncheon was served. Each of the brides was present ed a gift and the out-of-town guests, Mrs. James Baldwin, of Medina, Ohio. Mrs. Edwin C. Voss, of Greensboro, and Miss Jane Wilson, of Washington, D. C., were each given remem brances. • - Mrs. Wellborn Is Hostess to Garden Club Mrs. W. R. Wellborn entertain ed members of the Yadkin Valley Garden club at a delightful meet ing Thursday afternoon at her home cm Bridge street. The liv ing room and dining room of the home were attractively s arranged with colorful garden flowers. The informal program included reports from the state garden club meeting in Winston-Salon, which was attended by Mrs. W. W. Whi taker, a delegate from the cdub, and Mrs. E. G. Click, club president. The guest list Included eleven club members and one vis itor, Mrs. Charles G. Ashby. Baptist Circle Meetings Announced The circles of the W. M. U. of the First Baptist church will meet Monday and Tuesday in the fol lowing homes: Monday afternoon at 3:30 the Emma Leechman circle will meet with Mrs. R. P. Crater; the Naomi Shell circle with Mrs. T. V. Cock erham and the Neal Young circle with Mrs. S. O. Maguire. Monday evening at 7:30 the Rosalee Appleby circle will meet with Mrs. Herbert Madison. Tuesday morning at 10:30 the Pauline Moore circle will meet with Mrs. Herman Royall. Tues day evening at 7:30 the Pearl Johnson circle will meet with Mrs. C. N. Myers and the Edith Adair circle will meet with Miss Agnes Gray. All members are invited to at tend. Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Lapsley Entertain Wednesday Mrs. Roger Carter, of this city, and her sister, Mrs. Fraser Laps ley, of Badin, entertained Wed nesday at a lovely luncheon at the home of their mother, Mrs. J. L. Hall, on West Main street, to honor Misses Emalene Neaves and Caroline Lillard, two popular brides-elect. The home was artistically ar ranged throughout with pink and white peonies. The bride's table was centered with a miniature bridal party and the other tables were centered with nosegays of old fashioned garden flowers. Covers were laid for 28. Miss Caroline Lillard drew the prize, a crystal powder box, among the guests. Miss Lillard was also presented a vase and Miss Neaves was given a hors d'oeuvres tray. Mrs. Wilbur Carter, a bride of the early spring, was given an ice bucket. Mesdames Carter and Butner Fete Brides-Elect Friday Honoring Miss Emalene Neaves and Miss Caroline Lillard, brides elect, Mrs. Roger Carter and Mrs. Henry Butner entertained with a dessert-bridge Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Carter on Bridge street. The home was decorated throughout with peonies and sweet peas in pastel shades. Bridge was played during the afternoon at six tables and four additional friends came in for dessert. In the bridge progres sions scoring honors went to Mrs. C. J. Hyslup and Mrs. John Sagar for high and runner-up scores respectively. Miss Lillard was presented a vegetable dish in her pattern of china and Miss Neaves was presented silver in •her wedding pattern. Among the group who did not play bridge Mrs. Wilbur Carter drew the prize. Ices, moulded in wedding de signs, and individual cakes were served. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Harris, Jr., Entertain at Dinner Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Harris, Jr., entertained at a delightful dinner party Saturday evening at ' the home of Mrs. Harris* parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cox, on Gwyn Avenue, to honor Miss Emalene Neaves and Hartley Lord, who will be married in June, and Miss Caroline Lillard and Van W. Dil lon, Jr., who will be married this evening. The lower floor of the home was decorated with iris and roses and the seven small tables, where cov ers were placed for 28, were cen tered with bouquets of pansies. A beautifully appointed dinner was served. Out-of-town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. James Baldwin of Medina, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Voss of Greensboro, and Miss Jane Wilson of Washington, D. C. Miss Neaves was presented a pair of silver candlesticks and Miss Lillard was given a platter in her pattern of china. Each of the out-of-town visitors was pre sented a remembrance. ARLINGTON Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Swaim and Mr. and Mrs. Mont Swaim spent the week-end in Cliarlotte, with Mrs. Lillie Duenkie and children, Billie and Bobbie. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Rose and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Long and daughter, Peggy, spent Sunday in Taylorsvile, visiting in the home of Rev. Charles Holland. We regret to note that Mrs. Mcßride is very ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. W. Rose. A revival meeting is now in progress at the Arlington Baptist church, with the pastor, Rev. T. S. Draughan, in charge. Every one is cordially invited to attend. Was Absent-Minded The absent-minded professor met his son in school one morn ing and said: "Good morning, John. How's your father?" THURMOND | Several from this community attended the Sunday night ser vices of the Pilgrim Holiness church at Elkin. Miss Lavaude Simmons, of State Road, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Simmons. Mr. Junior Tedder, of Wilkes boro, was the Sunday guest of Mr. John Bell. Little Junior Speas is spending this week in Mocksville visiting his grandparents. Miss Sarah Darnell, of Roaring River, spent Sunday with Misses Sylvia and Irene Norman. Mr. Ronald Sturgill made a business trip to Burlington last Saturday. We are glad to note the im provement in Mrs. Levi Brooks, after an illness of several days. Mr. Walter Tate spent the week-end in Winston-Salem vis iting friends. Messrs. Ray, Claude and Cleve land Hicks, of Mocksville, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Speas, the latter their sister. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Austin, of Statesville, were Sunday guests of Mrs. J. A. Norman. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Bell visit ed friends in Alleghany county last week-end. Miss Helen Simmons has re turned to her work at Elkin after a short illness. MOUNTAIN PARK Miss Loduska Wood, of North Wilkesboro, is spending several days with Misses Hazel and Marie Wood. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris and family attended a birthday din ner at Lenoir Sunday. Miss Rosa Marshall and Mrs. Sam Marshall are spending some time in Winston-Salem. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Wood and family spent Sunday in Wilkes boro. Miss Ruth Thompson was the week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Spainhour in Jonesville. Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Gentry were the Sunday guesus of Mr. and Mrs. Reece Pardue, of Devo tion. Mr. James Miles and family were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Thompson. We are sorry to note that Bonce Mayes is very ill at this time. Miss Eva Vemon, of Mt. Airy, spent Wednesday night with Misses Irene and Vetra Haynes. ZEPHYR Rev.
