Schools Announced

Practically all teaching posi
tions in Surry county schools,
with the exception of Mount Airy
City schools, have been filled for
the 1940-41 term, it has been an
nounced by Superintendent John
W. Comer, wlw> has released the
various faculty lists.
In annminHng the lists. Comer
stated that practically all vacan
cies are reported filled, although
a few contracts have not been
forwarded to his office to date,
making it possible that the names
of two or three teachers already

um, and there is agitation that
such an institution be establish
ed.

Alfalfa, good as it is, could be
much better and plant breeders
of the college experiment
and the U. S. Department of Ag
riculture, are at work seeking to
improve on the existing varieties.

Loan from FSA to Buy
a Farm

Roscoe L. Chilton, tenant farm
er of Shoals section, Surry coun
ty, has received notice that his
application for a loan to buy a
farm has been approved by the
Farm Security Administration,
subject to satisfactory title.
Clyde O. Pickle, county RR
supervisor of the PSA, Dobson,
has instructed Mr. Chilton to ex
ercise the option he holds on the
80-acre farm he proposes to buy
and to have the seller prepare the
necessary papers. A check will
be passed in payment for the
property when satisfactory title
has been furnished by the present
owner.
The loan to buy this farm,
made possible by the Bankhead-
Jones Farm Tenant *V.ct, also in
cluded money for improvements,
repairing existing buildings and
erecting new buildings needed.
Terms of the loan provided for
annual repayments over a period
of 40 years at 3 per cent, interest.
Other tenant farmers for whom
loans to buy farms recently have
been .approved in this county in

Mr. Doyle Newman is spending
this week at Pinnacle, the guest
of his aunt, Mrs. Dock Culler.

family attended home-coming
services.at Hills Grove Baptist
church at Pilot Mountain Sun
day.
Rev. J, L. Powers conducted a
most successful revival at Mt.
Hermon Baptist church near
Crutchfield last week where he is
pastor. Several joined the church
and many professions were made.
It has been termed the greatest
revival held at this church in
years.
In the absence of the pastor.
Rev. Mr. Rollins filled the pulpit
at East Elkin Baptist church
Sunday and Sunday night. He
preached good sermons at both
services.
Mr. John Barker and Mr. Russ
Powers were supper guests in
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hay
wood Barker at Crutchfield.
Mr. and Mrs. Dock Cullers, of
Pinnacle visited relatives here
Sunday.
The Woman's Missionary soci
ety of East Elkin Baptist church
will hold their meeting this week
at the home of Mrs. T. M. Gam
bill. Miss Turner, field worker
for the Woman's Missionary so
ciety of the Baptist church, will
be the principal speaker.
Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Gambill
spent Sunday afternoon at Plea
sant Hill visiting their son, Fol
ger Gambill.
Miss Turner, field worker of the
Woman's Missionary union, will
be at East Elkin Baptist church
Tuesday night. Her object will
be to organize a young women's
Missionary society.
