HOLDSREUNION
Ten Members of Group Have
Banquet Tuesday Night
at Hotel Elkin
PROF. DIXON TEACHER
Members of the local high
school graduating class of 1917
met In reunion Tuesday evening
at Hotel Elkin. A four-course
ritnn»r was served in the private
rftntng room of the hotel. Of the
thirteen members the gass all
of them are still living and have
achieved some degree of distinc
tion in the world. Ten members
of the class were present for the
reunion, which was the first to
be held by any local graduating
class. A special guest for the
meeting was 'Prof. Z. H. Dixon,
who was the only teacher of the
class during their senior year in
high school, each teacher having
a grade at that time and teach
ing all of the subjects.
The class colors of black and
gold were used in the appoint
ments of the table. Mrs. W. E.
Hunter offered the invocation
and* Dr. Claude Parks acted as
master of ceremonies. Special
music by Mrs. C. O. Hadley inter
spersed the program. Each class
member present gave a brief
summary of his or her activities
during the 23 years since their
graduation and the closing fea
ture was a brief talk by Prof.
Dixon, who complimented the
class on their achievements in
their respective communities and
professions, and in conclusion he
quoted Longfellow's "Psalm of
Life," which was the poem he
read most often to the class as
seniors. "

tended the reunion were: Mrs.
Raymond Harris, the former Miss
Elizabeth Hubbard; Mrs. P. W.
Graham, the former Miss Ohna
Harris; Edworth Harris, Miss
Auba Gray, Mrs. Evelyn Bell
Carter and Mrs. Errol Hayes, the
former Miss Nina Whitaker, all
of Elkin; Mrs. W. E. Hunter, of
Raleigh, the former Miss Willie
Paul; Mrs. C. O. Hadley, of
Statesville, the former Miss
Maude Snow, Dr. Claude Parks,
of Winston-Salem, and Joe Hen
dren, of Tuscon, Arizona. The
three members of the class who
were absent were: Claude Glenn,
of Winston-Salem; Mrs. R. L.
Bostain, of Wilmington, the
former Miss Mary Dixon, and
Mayhew Hendren, of Jessup, Ga.

White Swan and Ice Plant
Will Serve Customers

ARRANGEMENTS MADE
Although their plant was swept
away in the flood, the White
Swan Laundry has resumed ser
vice here, opening a temporary
office in the Kiwanis room of
Hotel Elkin.
All clothes in the plant at the
time of the flood were saved and
are being delivered. Arrange
ments have been made with an
out-of-town laundry to handle the
service here until at such time a
new plant can be erected.
The laundry telephone number
is still 205, and customers should
call that number as usual for un
interrupted laundry service.
The Carolina Ice & Fuel Com
pany is also rendering uninter
rupted service to their ice patrons,
it was announced Thursday morn
ing. Although the plant will be
out of operation for some weeks,
arrangements have been made
with other plants to supply Elkin
with ice through the local com
pany.
JONESVILLE TAXES
DUE BY SEPT. 10th
All Jonesville town taxes now
due, should be paid at the Jones
ville town hall on or before Sep
tember 10, it has been announced
by R. M. Haynes, Jonesville tax
collector.
All 1939 town taxes of Jones
ville that are not paid by the
date set will be advertised and
sold, it was stated.
