Arrangements were made to of fer assistance immediately to the mountain section, with the un derstanding that seed and feed loans, WPA projects, and re placement of livestock and equip ment will be extended to easttern North Carolina when families are able to return to their farms and the full extent of the damage is known. Dean I. O. Schaub, director of North Carolina State College Ex tension service, called the con ference and presented reports from county agents in 20 western and northwestern counties, indi cating that more than 5,000 farm families in that area will need help. County Agents and AAA com mittemen are to be enlisted to certify families needing assist ance in rural areas. Emergency cases will be referred to county welfare departments, which wil provide food and clothing from the Surplus Commodities corpor ation and register farmers for WPA employment. The Farm Security Administra tion and the emergency corps and feed loan division will offer financial assistance in long-time rehabilitation. Most of the counties said the most urgent needs are seed, for age, and grain, or the chance to earn money to obtain these farm commodities. Corn and hay losses were the heaviest through out the western region. In addition to the pledges of assistance from agencies repre sented at the meeting, the con ference delegated Dean Schaub to investigate the possibilties of se curing aid from the Disaster Loan corporation, a subsidiary of the Reconstruction Finance Cor poration. Schaub has also appealed to the WPA and the Highway de partment for immediate works projects, so that farm families may earn money with which to buy seed and feed. Counties reporting the most losses, and the number of families needing assistance in each are: Caldwell, 500; Henderson, 500; Burke, 400; Watauga, 550; Yan cey, 50; Yadkin, 300; Surry, 200; Jackson, 100; McDowell, 15; Rutherford, 20 to 40; Polk, 25; Davie, 100; Avery, 400; Alexander, 100; Alleghany, 50.
