Mann motored to Winston-Salem
Wednesday and were accompan
ied home by the latter's mother,
Mrs. A. L. Briles, who spent the
remainder of the week here with
Mr. and Mrs. Mann.
Mr. Oneil Lineberry spent the
latter part of last week with
Messrs. Leo and Allen Wagoner,
of Brooks Cross Roads.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Myers spent
the week-end in Winston-Salem
visiting friends.

his home Friday after spending
the past week in Norfolk, Va., at

outdoor games were played, dur

Intermediate Union Enjoys
Picnic Thursday
The Intermediate Boys Union
met Thursday morning at the
Baptist church, motored to the
scenic highway, and enjoyed a
picnic on the Sparta road later
in the day. /

Bicycle Patrol Enjoys Ice Cream
Supper Saturday Night
The Jonesville Bicycle Patrol
enjoyed an ice cream supper Sat
urday night at the Methodist
church from 6:00 until 8:00
o'clock.
They were chaperoned by their
leader, Mr. Roy Beulin. During
the evening games were enjoyed
and everyone reported a good
time.
Master Kent Holcomb Honored on
First Birthday Anniversary
Mrs. M. A. Holcomb entertain
ed her son, Marvin Kent, on his
first birthday anniversary Tues
day afternoon at her home from
1:30 to 5:30.
The honoree was presented
with lovely gifts and during the
afternoon games were played on
the lawn.
Cake and ice cream were serv
ed to approximately 15 guests
and balloons were presented to
each guest as favors.
Eller Memorial Class Meets.
Tuesday Night
The Eller Memorial Class of
the Baptist church met Tuesday
evening at the home of their
leader, Miss Lexa Cummings.
Mrs. Ray Smith was in charge
of the devotionals and Miss Paul
ine Gilliam gave the scripture
reading after which Mr. P. A.
Lineberry, guest speaker for the
evening, gave a talk on "Coopera
tion" which was thoroughly en
joyed by all.
After the program, games were
enjoyed and Mrs. Joe Gilliam, a
recent bride, was presented crys
tal glasses.

ed during the business period af
ter which ice cream and cake
were served. "
Rose Marlowe Circle Meets
Tuesday Evening
The Rose Marlowe circle of the
Baptist church met Tuesday ev
ening at the home of Mrs. Ina
Holcomb, with Mrs. Harvey Hem
ric associate hostess.
Mrs. Ivry Johnson was in
charge of the program, "To the
Jew First," and was assisted by
Misses Bertha Adams and Mil
dred Harris, Mrs. Roby Casstev
ens and Mrs. M. A. Holcomb. Mrs.
P. A. Lineberry was in charge of
the devotionals.
During the business period rou
tine business was transacted.
Delicious refreshments were
served during the social hour to
nine members and one visitor.
BETHEL
The series of meetings that had
been in progress at Bethel church
came to a close last Sunday.
Many children from here en
tered school at Ronda Monday.
Roy Gilley, a senior this year, is
driving the school bus and goes
to Clingman first and gets the
high school pupils, taking the
grammar grade students on the
east line to Clingman, then
gathers the children here and
goes by way of Elkin, until the
bridge at Ronda is rebuilt.
Eugene Jones is at Boone this
week in the interest of the Win
ston-Salem Journal-Sentinel.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Morrison
are moving this week to a resi
dence located on the new Jones
ville-Swan Creek road.
Miss Norma Gilliam, who has
entered Draughn's Business Col
lege in Winston-Ssflem, came last
Sunday and attended a gathering
and dinner given for her great
grandmother, Mrs. Porter, near
Roaring River, with her parents
and other members of the imme
diate family.
Kenneth and Thomas Stroud
spent last week visiting in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
Stroud in Wilkesboro.
Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Triplette
and children, Clay, Ethel and
Estelle, were the dinner guests of
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Morrison last
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bascum (Jack)
Ingram and daughter, Ailene, and
Miss Belle attended the reunion
held last week-end at Stony Point
for the York family, the former's
maternal relatives.
Mrs. C. W. Gilliam, Sr., ana
son, Flake Gilliam, returned to
their home here last Sunday from

J. B. Armstrong and Louis Fer
lazzo, in Winston-Salem.

pointment at Rocky Ford church
in Surry county last Sunday. He
was accompanied by Mrs. Gllley
and small children who visited
relatives.
Mrs. Minnie Segraves, of Jones
ville, visited her niece and fam
ily here last week-end, Mrs. Q. P.
Pardue. Other guests in the Par
due home for several days last
week were Misses Polly and Kate
Pardue, of the Brier Creek com
munity. They also attended the
revival here at Bethel church.
Miss Verna Matthews, of East
Bend, returned to her home last
Sunday after spending several
weeks here with her sister and
family, Mrs. Ellis Jester.
Mrs. Henry L. Weatherman, of
Surry county, is here visiting her
son and family, Mr. Jester.
"~M r. Winfield Schasher, of
Harmony, who has operated a
sawmill near here for the past
few months and made his home
at W. H. Jones', received news
last Tuesday that his little
grandson, Billy Turner, of
Greensboro, sustained a serious
spine injury when he felt thirty
feet from a tree.
Josephine Roberts, the eight
year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Will Roberts, of this place,
is at the Hugh Chatham hospital
at Elkin, being treated for blood
poisettßfr.
Miss Cora Brooks, who has
been at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
A. L. Triplette for some time,
was married to Banks Harold, of
Mountain View, last Thursday.
Carl Durham, of Swan Creek,
visited his sister and family here
last Sunday, Mrs. Martin Green,
and was the guest of his former
Sunday school class Sunday
morning.

The Holcomb reunion was held
at the homestead of the father,
Mr. Prank Holcomb, Sunday,
September 1. A well filled table
was spread on the lawn and a
fine dinner was enjoyed by a host
of relatives and friends. Among
the invited guests was Rev. W. V.
Brown, who preached a wonder
ful sermon, and sang in the af
ternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Van Hoy
and daughter, Miss Ruth, of Del
aware, and Mrs. Mildred Reid, of
Pennsylvania, were the week-end
guests of Mr. Van Hoy's uncle and
aunt, Mr. .and Mrs. Tom Van Hoy.
Master John Van Hoy, who has
been spending the past three
weeks here, will leave with his
parents for their home Monday.
Miss Lucille Van Hoy returned
to her home here the past week
after spending a month with
relatives and friends in Delaware
and Pennsylvania, and visiting
many places of interest in the
North.
We regret to note that little
Miss Imogene Groce, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Noah Groce, is con
fined to her room with scarlet
fever and rheumatism. We wish
fdr her a speedy recovery.
Mr. Weaver Holcomb will
spend this week in Winston-Sa
lem, the guest of his sister, Mrs.
Durid Calloway, and Mr. Callo
way.
