W: WULARD ' DIES THURSDAY / Elkin Man Passes Away at I His Home on Gwyn Ave nue After Long Illness RITES HELD SATURDAY John William Willard, 71, passed away at his home on Gwyn avenue Thursday morning at "8:45, fol lowing a long period of ill health from repeated paralytic strokes, and a critical illness of two weeks. Mr. Willard was a native of Long town, Yadkin county, and a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Foy Willard, and had made his home here since he was seven years old. He was a highly esteemed man. „ At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the Elkin Masonic lodge, having been affili ated with the organization 45 years. He was engaged in the contracting business until he was forced to retire on account of ill health. He was twice married, first to Miss Janie Bryant and after her death to Mrs. Florence Perry, to whom he had been married 22 years. No children survive. In addition to his wife he is survived by one sister, Mrs. P. M. Hocutt of Winston-Salem, a step-son, Dr. Richard C. Perry of Ferndale, Mich., who is ill in a Rochester, N. Y. hospital, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Delia Ackler of Syracuse, N. Y., who was here for the funeral rites. Greene en tertained at a chicken stew Wed nesday evening to honor of their daughter, Miss Grace Greene, who left Thursday for Greens boro where she is a member of the school faculty. There was a large crowd to attendance and the event was enjoyed by all. Mr. Cling Myers, of Wilkesboro, spent several days with hi s mother and family recently. The Clingman baseball team was defeated at Purlear Saturday by a score of 9 to 5. Misses Peggy Greene and Jackie Beck, of Mocksville, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wade Greene and other relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Greene, Mrs. H. A. Burchette and Miss Grace Burchette visited in Ronda Sunday afternoon. NORTH CAROLINA ' 1 APPRECIATION IS EXPRESSED Thurmond Chatham Presents Local CCC Camp S4OO to Refinish Hall OTHER GIFTS ARE MADE In appreciation for the aid ren dered during the recent flood by members of Camp Hancock, CCC Camp here, Thurmond Chatham, president of the Chatham Manu facturing company, has presented the camp with a check for S4OO from the company to be used in redecorating and reftoishtog the recreation hall at the camp, it was announced Tuesday by Lieut. Owen Huff, camp commander. Other gifts to the camp to ap preciation for the service rendered the community in the flood was a gift of window draperies for the recreation hall by the American Legion Auxiliary, and a donation of pictures by Rose's store. The CCC enrollees worked un tiringly during the rising flood waters in aiding manufacturers and business men to move all possible supplies and machinery to high ground and after the flood they aided to clearing the streets of debris and also patroled bridges and roads to dangereous areas.
