Harold Click, president at the Parent-Teacher Associa tion, requests that all officers and committee chairmen of the asso ciation meet at the elementary school auditorium Friday after noon, September 20, at 3:30. Im portant business will be transact ed and all members of the execu tive committee are urged to be present. Parent-Teachers to Meet in Initial Session Members of the Parent-Teacher Association will meet in the ini tial session of the school year at the elementary school building Monday afternoon, September 30, at 3:30. All members are urged to attend and new members are cordially invited. The meeting Is being postpon ed until the school auditorium, which is being repaired, is com pleted. Mrs. Blan Cockerham, assisted by Misses Helen Hayes, Bertice Bates, Lucille Cockerham, Anne Newman, Jean and Ruth Martin, Grace Lawrence, Marie Newman and Frances Martin, presented an interesting program on "His Chosen People." Refreshments were served dur ing a pleasant social hour. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Walters Honor S. 8. Leaders Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Walters entertained at a delightful chick en stew at their home in North Elkin Tuesday evening, having as guests fifty officers and teachers of the Sunday school of Elkin Valley Baptist church. Mr. Wal ters is superintendent of the Sunday school. Rev. R. E. Adams, of Mayodan, pastor of the church, offered the invocation after the guests were assembled. A delicious supper was served. Following the sup per group singing was enjoyed. A round table discussion of work of the Sunday school was also en gaged in. The benediction was pronounced by J. B. Mitchell. The living room of the home was artistically arranged with bowls of autumn flowers. An Interesting program on American Cliffdwellers was pre sented by Mrs. Fred Neaves. Cur rent events of interest were given by Mrs. Earl M. Hodel. A two-course collation was served at the conclusion of the program to the following mem bers: Mesdames Marlon Allen, Errol Hayes, R. C. Freeman, Earl M. Hodel, Garland Johnson, Fred Neaves, A. B. Somers, Hugh Roy all and D. Q. Smith. Earl Pardne Is Feted at Party Wednesday Evening Honoring their son and broth er, Earl Pardue, who left the early part of the week for Chapel Hill to enter college at the uni versity of North Carolina, Mrs. Free Pardue and Miss Violet Par due entertained at a weiner roast and scavenger hunt Wednesday evening of last week at their home in Arlington. The guest list included nine couple of the high school and college set. Supper was served upon the arrival of the guests at 6:30. Prizes in the hunt went to Misses Mary Eliza beth Allen and Dorothy Harrell and Bob Chatham and Bill Par due. Miss Wilda Mae Mathls, of Washington, D. C., was the only out-of-town guest. Mason Lillard Class Meets With Mrs. W. C. Cox Mrs. W. C. Cox was hostess to the Mason Lillard Bible class of the Sunday school of the Meth odist church at her home on Owyn avenue Monday evening. Mrs. Fred Colhard, president of the class, was in charge of the devotionals and presided over the business session. An interesting program, consisting of a quiz of facts concerning North Carolina, was presented by Miss Blanche Dixon. Plans for the annual chicken stew, for members of the class and their families, were made. The stew will be held on the ev ening of September 30. During a pleasant social hour the hostess served a delicious re freshment course. Weiner Roast Fetes Senior B. T. P. U. Members Members of the Senior B. Y. P. U. of the Elkin Valley Baptist church were entertained at a weiner roast Thursday evening on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Woodruff, with Misses Lillian Johnson and Grace Law rence as hostesses. A delicious supper was served to the following guests: Misses Lula and Lillian Johnson, Fran ces Martin, Mildred and Grace Lawrence and Ruby McCoin, Bill Trevathan, Charles Pulp, Worth and Charles Johnson, Ralph Mc- Coin, Winfred Holder and John Wall. Mrs. Whitaker Is Hostess to Thursday Book Club Mrs. W. W. Whitaker was host* ess to members of the Thursday Afternoon Book club and several visitors at her home on Church street Thursday afternoon. Rook was played at four tables in the living room and library. The rooms were attractively arranged with bouquets of pink dahlias and pink and purple asters. In the games the high score award went to Mrs. Mason Lillard and the consolation prize to Mrs. J. G. Abernethy. Mrs. Van W. Dillon, Sr., a bride of the summer, and Mrs. C. P. James, of Mount Airy, an out-of-town guest, were pre sented lovely remembrances. Guests in addition to club members were Mrs. Dillon, Mrs. James, Mrs. W. Q. Cox, Mrs. Mae Bodenheimer Greenwood and Mrs. Errol Hayes. A beautifully appointed two course collation was served late in the afternoon. Baptist W. M. U. Meets Monday Afternoon The monthly inspirational meeting of the W. M. U. of the First Baptist church met at the church Monday afternoon with a good attendance from all of the circles of the union present. Mrs. F. M. Norman, vice-president, presided over the meeting. The devotional service was in charge of Miss Fannie Sue Har ris and the program was present ed by the Neal Young circle, of which Mrs. I. C. Yates is chair man, and consisted of an inter esting talk on "The Jew, First," by Mrs. E. C. James. A feature of the meeting was a home mission program, con sisting of readings and poems, presented by members of the Sunbeam Band.lmder the direc tion of Mrs. Byron Transou and Mrs. Turner Carter. During the business session plans were made for the annual observance of the birthday of the W. M. U. in next month. Other routine business was transacted. White-Hombuckle Marriage Is Announced Of cordial interest to friends here is the announcement of the marriage of Miss Annie Lenora White of Newton, to Rev. James Pinkney Hornbuckle, Jr., which was solemnized Saturday after noon at Fairgrove Methodist church, near Newton, with Rev. J, P, Hornbuckle, Sr., of Hickory, father of the bridegroom, offic iating. Mrs. Hornbuckle is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. White of Newton, and before her wedding held a secretarial position in Con over. N Rev. Mr. Hornbuckle is the eldest son of Rev. and Mrs. James Pinkney Hornbuckle, Sr., of Hickory, and is serving as as sistant pastor of the Highland Methodist charge at Hickory, while completing his studies at Lenoir-Rhyne College, where he is a member of the senior class. He is well known here, having served as pastor of the Gras sy Creek and Ronda Methodist churches several years ago. Pleasant Hill W. M. U. Is Entertained Friday The women of Pleasant Hill Baptist church have an unusual ly active missionary circle. Or ganizing with seven members one year ago, the membership has grown within the year to 20. Dur ing the first year the work was devoted mainly to study of the outlined programs and social work in the immediate commun ity. With the beginning of the year plans are being formulated for a study course and other ac tivities are being planned. Members of the circle were en tertained at a weiner roast at the home of the president, Mrs. E. R. Settle, Friday evening. Follow ing the supper group singing was enjoyed. Those enjoying the hospitality of Mrs. Settle were: Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Couch, Mr. and Mrs. Ebb Eads, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Couch, Mesdames Julia Darnell, Sue Schumann, W. J. Burcham, Dan iel Creed, Everette Darnell, C. R. Darnell, Jack Smoot, Zora Couch, Robert Wilmoth, Raymond Dow ell, Ranzy Luffman, Misses Ruth Ray, Beulah and Lottie Couch and Elizabeth Settle, Noah J. Set tle and Claude and Charles Wil moth and Joe Settle. Charter Meeting of W. S. C. S. Held; Officers Elected The charter meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church was held at the church Monday afternoon. Rev. Herman P. Duncan, pas tor of the church, was in charge of the service setting forth the purpose and plan of the new or ganization of the women's divi sion of the Methodist church. Mrs. W. W. Whitaker, chair man of the nominating commit tee, submitted the following of ficers for the organization, who were unanimously elected: Presi dent, Mrs. George Royall; vice president, Mrs. J. L. Hall; corre sponding secretary, Mrs. E. P. McNeer; recording secretary, Mrs. Max Boyles; treasurer, Mrs. Ma son Lillard, and the following de partment secretaries: missionary education, Mrs. H. C. Salmons; Christian social relations, Mrs. W. W. Whitaker; local church ac tivities, Mrs. E. S. Spainhour; student work, Mrs. Robert Har ris; young women's work, Mrs. Herman P. Duncan; children's work, Mrs. Roscoe Poplin; litera ture, Mrs. M. A. Biggs; publicity, Mrs. W. M. Evans; supplies, Mrs. Sam Neaves. Following the election of offi cers a most impressive enrollment ceremony was observed, using the candlelight service. Those taking part were Rev. Herman F. Dim can, Mrs. George Royall, Mrs. J. G. Abernethy, Mrs. R. C. Free man, Mrs. C. G. Ashby and Mrs. Max Boyles. Eighty-seven en rolled as charter members. Dur ing the service Mrs. Van Dillon, Jr., played a program of organ music. The concluding number was a vocal solo, "Hymn of Loy alty," by Mrs. Roscoe Poplin. A social hour was enjoyed in the church parlor at the conclu sion of the program. A hostess committee composed of Mrs. E. P. McNeer, Mrs. E. E. Hayes, Mrs. W. M. Allen and Mrs. Joe Bivins, served hot tea and wafers. Mem bers of the school faculty were guests for the refreshment hour.
