If Wife Works Her Husband Can't Claim Her As a Dependent Washington, Sept. 21 Army officials made it plain today that married men will not be exempt ed from the draft simply and au tomatically because they are mar ried. In each individual case, that point is to be decided by the local draft board on its own merits and, if necessary, after an inquiry as to whether the wife or other dependent is actually dependent upon the draftee's earnings for a livelihood. Thus, private means of income and such questions as whether the wife has a job ap parently are to be taken into con sideration. Officials of the selective service system reversed a previous opin ion to set this forth today. BUILDING & LOAN TO OPEN ITS 74th SERIES A program of systematic sav ings is suggested by the Elkin Building & Loan Association as the association announces the opening of its 74th series on Tuesday, October 1. It is under the capable manage ment of a group of Elkin and Jonesville business men, who are as follows: J. R. Poindexter, E. F. McNeer, F. M. Norman, W. C. Cox, C. S. Foster, S. G. Holcomb, J. L. McCOIN-YOUNG CLANS HOLD ANNUAL REUNION Members of the McCoin and Young families met in fourth an nual reunion Sunday at Grassy Creek church, north of Elkin, for an all-day program and picnic dinner. Approximately 250 rela tives and friends of the two families, many from distant states, attended the gathering. Rev. Mr. Cooper, of Thurmond, was the principal speaker for the morning session. The afternoon was spent informally. A bounti ful dinner was served at the noon hour. During the business hour it was decided that Grassy Creek church be the regular scene of the an nual gathering. SURRY WEED CROP MAY REACH 9 MILLION LBS. Surry county farmers planted approximately 11,00 acres of to bacco this year and will produce between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 pounds of tobacco, R. R. Smith wick, county agent, estimated a few days ago. The Surry tobacco farmers cut their crop from 15,500 acres in 1939 to approximately 11,000 acres this year. The 1940 crop is regarded about average in quality, the county agent reported. The county was hard hit by hail in some sections and blue mold got in about an average amount of damage. The crop generally matured early. A Delaware law requires all highway pedestrians to wear a white cloth at night to make them visible to motorists. For rent Six-room house at Brooks Cross Roads.
