GABj^^P WHEN WILL SPEEDING BE CURBED? We have talked about speeding and reckless driving so much that no attention is paid to it, but nevertheless this dangerous practice reigns uncurbed here in Elkin, especially on residential streets where children take their lives in their hands every time they cross the street. Police have made some effort to curb this practice and some arrests have been made, but un fortunately there are just not enough police in Elkin to look after the matter if the business of attending to traffic in the business section is to be attended to. Chief of Police Corbett Wall knows how bad the situation is, and is greatly concerned about it, but he can't be everywhere at one time. Just to give you some idea how folks feel about speeders and reckless drivers who make a speedway of the residential streets daily, we'll quote Sam Atkinson: He said that so bad was the traffic situation on West Main street that his family never sits on the front porch any more be cause they are afraid to. They never know when some loose nut at a steering wheel is going to fail to take the curve and land, car and all, in the same rocking chair with them. One took the curve in front of his house so fast that the rims of his wheels actually scraped the pavement, throwing sparks. Then, as they headed north up West Main street, one passed the other on the curve which begins in front of the Transou home, regardless of the fact that numerous small chil dren daily play along the streets in that neighborhood; children who in the most part are too small to realize the danger of oc casionally toddling into the streets. We know of one instance of an Elkin citizen telling local police that if some of the speeders who daily whiz by his house ever hits his child, it won't be necessary to send a police car for the driver. A hearse will be what will be needed, he said. REGISTRATION DAY One of the registrars who aided in registering the nearly 1,000 young men who reported here for that duty last week, told us this THE ELKIN TRIBUNE, ELKIN, NORTH CAROLINA one during the course of the day's work: A colored man, she said, who possessed only one upper tooth, and was decidedly grey, came to her table. "I wants to fight for Surry county," he said. "But you are not going to have to fight," he was told, "just be ready In case there is a war." "I don't care," the colored man Insisted, "I was born in Surry and I aims to fight for Surry." "Where do you live?" he was asked. "Jonesville," he said. "Then you should register In Jonesville." "No, ma'am, I aims to register in Surry." "Okey, if that's the way you feel about It," the registrar told him, "when were you born?" "I was born ifc 1903," the darkle replied. "Are you sure?" he was asked. "Yes, ma'am, dead sure. I'se got It down in the Bible at home." » "Then you can't register," he was told. "You're too old." The colored man drew himself up to full height. "Can't regis ter!" he said. "We'll see about that. I'll go over to Jonesville!" Another registrar reported that a man told her, when she asked him when he was born, that he was bom on Saturday. The business of registering went along mighty smoothly here. We were registered by Miss Claudia Austin. And we might state at this point that it has taken a world crisis and the first peacetime dr&ft in the na tion's history to bring home to us the information that we have a "ruddy" complexion. Or maybe that was as close as Miss Austin could come on the registration blank to "muddy." Hilary Marsh, who is above draft age, came in to register. He said he didn't know whether he was too old or not, but he wasn't going to take any chances. For the benefit of you good souls who are now 35 years of age, but will be 36 years old with in the next few days, or within the next few months, or maybe you were 36 the day after you were registered—if you are won dering if you will automatically be relieved of army call the day! you become, or became 36, the answer is no. No matter if you became 36 the day following the registration, you're subject to call for the next five years. Well, so long, buck. EAST ELKIN Rev. Claude E.
