Thursday, October 31, 1940 EDUCATOR DIES WEDNESDAY PM Prof. Dan W. Martin Passes Away Following Brief Illness FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY Prof. W. Dan Martin, 86, well known Yadkin cbunty educator, died at the Yadkin clinic at Yad kinville Wednesday night follow ing a brief illness. He suffered a paralytic stroke on Saturday and his condition grew steadily worse until his death. Mr. Martin was a native of Yadkin county and a life-long resident of the county. He was well known for his educational work. Beginning first as a teach er in the county schools, he later served three different terms as county superintendent of schools, m the 1919 session he served as librarian of the state senate. He was twice married, first to Miss Mollle Gough, and after her death to Mrs. Mollle Steelman Shore, who survives him, with six sons, Dr. Floyd Martin, Dunn; Glover Martin, Smithfleld attor ney; Dr. W. T. Martin, of Ra leigh; Dr. James A. Martin, of Lumberton; Clyde Martin, of Lil lington, and Dwight D. Mr. Clyde Cockerham, of Win ston-Salem, visited relatives here last Sunday. Mr. Charles Swift and Mr. Edd Beane spent last Sunday at Boone visiting friends. Mrs. Wolfe Entertains Mrs. Henry Wolfe entertained at a tea at her home in honor of the brides of the Mountain Park school faculty, Mrs. Ray Coon, Mrs. Frank Moore, Mrs. C. B. Kirby and Mrs. Jim Dan Hem mings. White chrysanthemums were used in decoration. The hostess received the guests at the entrance. The table, with lace cover and silver candelabra hold ing white tapers, was presided over by Miss Myran Ficklin. Flincham, presi dent. Charlie Hinson read the scripture lesson, after which Fete Gambill led the opening prayer. Ralph Smoot, Boyce Hinson and Tommy Parker told Bible stories. Ray Freeman recited a Biblical poem. Twenty-three members were present. Mr. Shirley Hinson, Mrs. G. W. Creed and Mrs. Nina Smoot were guest speakers and made wonderful talks. Refresh ments were served by the host. Rev. Claude E. Flincham has returned from High Point and Winston-Salem where he spoke to two young People's organiza tions at these points. Rev. J. L. Powers, our pastor, filled his regular appointment at Mountain View church Sunday. He preached a wonderful sermon Sunday at 11 a.m. on the subject, "Kinds of Hearts." At the night service he was unanimously elect ed, pastor of that church for an indefinite time and was highly praised for his work as pastor. The G. A. girls held their reg ular meeting at the home of Mrs. G. W. Creed, president, Friday night. Mrs. Creed presided over the meeting. A good meeting was held and refreshments were serv ed by the hostess. Mrs. Dallas Newman is spend ing this week at Pinacle visiting relatives. Mr. P. D. Hawks, Jr., of Greensboro, visited friends here Sunday. Mr. Roger Stewart, of- Pilot Mountain, was a visitor here Sunday. Mr. Doyle Newman spent Sun day visiting friends near Cycle. LITTLE ELKIN Rev. Lester Johnson filled his regular appointment here Satur day night and Sunday. Rev. J. H. Luffman has been conducting a revival meeting at Flint Hill, where he is pastor, for the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Felts and Mr. and Mrs. John Love were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arlen Money at Swan Creek. Miss Zelma Key spent Friday and Saturday with her sister, Mrs. G. H. Sale, and Mr. Sale, at Ronda. Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Luff man, of Erlanger, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. B. LuffAian. Misses Mary, Nellie and Ruby Laster, Lucille Vanhoy and Zel ma Key visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Council Laster, near Cycle, Sunday afternoon. A large number of people from this community, attended the Young People's program at Cool Springs Sunday night.
