Mount Airy, with only members of the immediate families present. The Reverend Edwin B. Jeffress of Oxford, former pastor of the bride, performed the ceremony. Mrs. S. Bailey Glenn, organist, and Frank Borden Hanes, soloist, presented the wedding music con sisting of the traditional wedding marches, the “Lord’s Prayer,” and “O Perfect Love.” The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a candlelight satin dress and her mother’s wed ding veil of Brussel’s lace. The groom was attended by his father as best man. Hugh Gwyn Chatham, of Elkin, brother of the groom, and Fred Folger, Jr., brother of the bride, were the ushers. Officers Pay Visit Here The worthy grand officers of the grand chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of North Carolina, paid an official visit to the local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Friday evening, when the group met at the new Masonic Hall. Among the officers attending the meeting were Mrs. Edna C. Moag, worthy grand matron of Greensboro, Dr. Frank Duke, worthy grand patron, and Mrs. Duke, of Washington. N. C., Helen Rimmer, associate grand conduc tress, of Chapel Hill, Hilda High britton. district deputy of tl^e 20th district, of Clyde. Following the meeting a social hour was enjoyed. A color scheme of puiple and orchid, colors of the grand worthy matron, were carried out in the decorations and appointments. Senior Womans Club To Meet The newly organized Senior Woman’s Club will meet Thursday evening, September 8. at 8 p. m. at the Gilvin Roth YMCA. Persons who are interested in the organization who did not at tend the last meeting are invited to meet with the group. At the meeting a report from the nominating committee com posed of Dv. Olivia Abernethy, chairman, Mrs. C. H. Leary and Mrs. J. H. Beeson, will be given. The constitution and by-laws committee will make a report. Mrs. C. C. Wright is chairman of the committee and serving with her are Mrs. Fred York and Mrs. Gar land Johnson. The club held its organizational meeting on August 11, at which time Mrs. Ed M. Anderson of West Jefferson, president of the North Carolina Federation of Woman’s Clubs, met with the group. held at the home of the bride’s parents immediately following the ceremony. About 10 per cent of the people known as Afghans are able to read and write. Miss Harris, Mr. Mayberry, Wed ' MRS. R. C. MAYBERRY Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Freeland Harris announce the marriage of their daughter, Anna Weedon, to Richard Chatham Mayberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore P. May berry, on Saturday afternoon at the Methodist Chapel in Chapel Hill. Only close friends of the couple witnessed the ceremony. Immediately following the cere mony, the couple left on a wed ding trip to More’liead City. Mrs. Mayberry is a graduate of Salem Academy, Winston-Sal em, and attended Duke University, Durham. Mr. Mayberry, a graduate of El kin High School, is a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Mrs. Pardue Is Shown Courtesy Honoring Mrs. Jack Pardue, who before her recent marriage was Miss Jerry Wall, Mrs. Odelle Seymour and Mrs. Bob Lawrence entertained at a Coca-Cola party Wednesday afternoon of last week at the home of Mrs. Paul Eidson, Gwyn Avenue. The home was beautifully dec orated with arrangements of glad ioli and roses, furnishing a pret ty parti# setting. Contests were played with the prizes going to Miss Louisa Roth, Miss Tommy Joe Darnell and Mrs. Pardue. The honoree was presented a corsage and a gift of crystal in her chosen wedding pattern. Mrs. Jiip Crater, a recent bride, was given a remembrance. A delicious refreshment course was served to the 15 guests, friends of the honoree. Mrs. Gwaltney Feted Friday As a farewell courtesy to Mrs. J. C. Gwaltney who will leave in September to make her home in New Orleans, La., Mrs. E. G. Jor dan and Mrs. Bill Freeman en tertained at a chicken stew on Friday evening. A delicious supper of chicken stew and accessories were served picnic style on the lawn of the Jordan home. Following the supper the guests presented Mrs. Gwaltney with gifts of lingerie. The guest list included 45 friends of the honoree. Out-of town guests were Mrs. Olin Sprinkle of Winston-Salem and Mrs. M. E. Wall of Baltimore, Md. H. M. Willis . Speaks To Club H. M. Willis, soil conservation ist, was guest speaker at a meeting of the Yadkin Valley Garden Club, Thursday afternoon, at the home of Mrs. J. L. Hall, West Main Street. , Mr. Willis used as his topic of discussion, “Lawns.” . Mrs. Eugene Motsinger, Jr., president of the Junior Woman’s Club, was present at the meeting to ask the cooperation of the Gar den Club in assisting the Junior Womans Club to carry out a com munity improvement project. Mrs. J. P. Hendren, honorary member of the Garden club, was present at the meeting. At the conclusion of the meet ing a tempting refreshment course was served by the hostess. Miss Carter Is Party Honoree Miss Harriette Anne Carter was honored at a surprise birthday party, Tuesday evening at the Nurses’ home. The guest list included approxi mately 40 persons, members of the staff and personnel of Hugh Chat ham Memorial Hospital. During the evening, games and contests were enjoyed. A tempting refreshment course consisting of birthday cake, ice cream, sandwiches and punch, were served. % Miss Carter was the recipient of many lovely gifts.
