Jn News of Parties, Clubs, Weddings TELEPHONE No. 96 I 4-H Club Meeting Is Held Tuesday The 4-H Club of Elkin High School was held Tuesday morning with the president, Anna '"'Jean Holbrook, presiding. Jeanette Atkins conducted the devotionals followed by the read ing of the minutes by Fiances Osborne. A demonstration on manners was given by Miss Leslie Johnson, assistant home demonstration agent, and Donald Halsey, assist ant county agent. Miss Gentry, Mr. Shore, Betrothed Miss Frances Lee Gentry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arie Gentry of this city, became the bride of Harold M. Shore, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Shore on Sat urday. The wedding took place at the home of the officiating minister Rev. Noah Holbrook of Jonesville. Mrs. Dallas Gilliam, president, presided over the meeting. The hostesses served refresh ments to the nurses, Mrs. Hugh Laffoon, Mrs. Edgar Hicks, Mrs. Hope Brown. Mrs. Dallas Gilliam. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. McCoin. The Thanksgiving motif was carried out in the decorations and appointments. Mrs. Dallas Gilliam will be hos tess to the group for the De cember meeting. P.-T. A. Has Social Tuesday The Elkin High School Parent Teachers Association met for a social meeting on Tuesday evening at the high school building. Mrs. Frank Bivins, president of the group, presided over the meet ing. During the evening skits were presented with the parents and teachers taking part and games and contests were played. Approximately 50 parents and teachers attended the meeting. Mrs. Garvey Simmons led the j devotional and Mrs. A. D. McCoin j offered prayer. Before the pro gram, Mrs. Raymond Johnson J sang a solo. Mrs. Lester Cass, program chair- j man, presented Mrs. Robert Tran- j sou, guest speaker, who gave the j topic of the month, “The Answer for the Moslem Lands.” The meet ing was closed with a chain of prayers led by Mrs. Smith Collins and Mrs. Oscar Darnell. The Junior Girls’ Auxiliary met Tuesday afternoon at the home of Miss Jean Konkle with 15 mem bers present. Miss Konkle? presi dent, presided over the meeting. The G. A. watchword and al legiance was repeated by the group and Mrs. James Allen led in pray er. Miss Margaret Fletcher, program chairman, presented the program on the month’s topic, “Christ the Answer in Moslem Lands” vith the members present taking pirt. Mrs. Tom Shore led in the clos ing prayer. Bride-Elect Is Honored Tuesday Honoring Miss Jessie Mae Weatherman who will wed Davis Hugh Swaim on December 2, Miss j Ellen Weatherman and Mrs. Ruth Mastin entertained at a miscell I aneous shower on Tuesday evening at the home of the bride-elect’s mother, Mrs. W. S. Weatherman. The bridal colors of green and white were cariied out in the dec orations, furnishing a pretty party j setting. Bridal games and contests were enjoyed with the prizes going to j Mrs. Wade Jarvis, Miss Gladys Cheek, Mrs. Eloise Sturdivant and Mrs. Velma Armstrong. The bridal motif was repeated in the refreshment course which was served by the hostesses assist ed by Miss Jeanette Myers and Mrs. Clarence Weatherman. The honoree was presented a corsage by the hostesses and many lovely gifts by the 30 guests, friends of the honoree. jalem Alumnae Meet Tuesday Members of the Salem College 1 College Alumnae chapter from El kin, North Wilkesboro and Wilkes boro, met for a dinner session at Hotel Wilkes, North Wilkesboro, Tuesday evening. Mrs. Claude A. McNeill, Jr„ of Elkin, president, presided over a short business session, after which an enjoyable social hour was held. Among those attending the meeting were Mrs, J. B. Carter, Mrs. J. H. Whicker, Mrs. Fred Hubbard, Jr., Mrs. T. G. Perry, Mrs. C. C. Faw, Jr„ Mrs. B. D. Storey, Miss Helen Phillips, Mrs, C. Monroe Williams, Miss Mary Lena Colvard, Miss Mary Elmore Finley and Mrs. George F. Ver don, all of North Wilkesboro; Mrs. W. C. Prevette of Wilkesboro; Mrs. C. A. McNeill, Jr., Mrs. J. P. Movie To Be Shown By Garden Cluh In conjunction with the show ing of festive tables and flower arrangements to be presented by j the Yadkin Valley Garden Club, Thursday, November 17, a 32 min ute technicolor film on the Bel lingrath Gardens of Mobile, Ala., will be shown. The exhibit of the tables and flower arrangements will be held in the parlor of the YMCA, and may be seen during the hours of 3 to 6 p. m„ and from 7 to 9 p. m. A small admission will be charged to see the display. The movie will be shown in the library of the YMCA at 4 p. m., and again ‘at 8 p. m. No charge will be made to see the. movie. The public is cordially invited to attend the movie and the ex hibit. NCFA Chapter Holds Meeting The local chapter of the North Carolina Education Association met Tuesday at Elkin High School. Following a short business ses siorf, Miss Rosalee Andrews, field secietary of the North Carolina Education Association, talked to the group on the organization and purposes of the NCEA. Mrs. W. L. Hine was program chairman. Denver Holcomb conducted the devotional service. i Methodist Groups Convene Monday The circles of the Womans So ciety of Christian Service of the First Methodist Church, met Mon day as follows: Circle No. 1 met with Mrs. Claude Farrell with 21 members and one visitor, Mrs. Mel Mc Adams, present. Mrs. George E. Royall conducted the devotional after which Mrs. E. G. Click sang a hymn. Atty. J. N. (Buck* Free man who was on the defense coun sel at the Japanese war trials,! spoke to the group on “Japan.” Mrs. A. O. Bryan and Mrs. W. A. Finney were hostesses to Circle No. 2 at the former’s home. The devotional was conducted by Mrs. D. G. Smith. Russell Burcham spoke to the group on “India.” Sixteen members and one visitor, Mrs. J. H. Townsend of Red Springs, were present. Miss Nancy Smith was welcomed as a new j member. Circle No. 3 met with Mrs. W. M. Allen with Mrs. M. C. White ner as associate hostess. Eighteen members and one new member, Mrs. Robert Lankford were pres ent. The devotional service was conducted by Mrs. H. C. Salmons and Mrs. J. A. Booher presented the program on "Japan.” Circle No. 4 met with Mrs. John Sagar with Mrs. H. W. Thompson and Mis. James Meed as co-hos tesses. “Thanksgiving" was the theme of the devotionals given by Mrs. Charles Ashby. Miss Anna Katherine Dobson was guest speaker and she told of the work and purpose of the Youth Fellow ship. Two new members, Mrs. Alex Chatham, Jr., and Mrs. H. L. Simard were welcomed into the group. Twenty-two members were present and two visitors, Mrs. Owen Gwyn and Mrs. Paul Gwyn. Mrs. Alexander Smith presented the program on “Japan” at Circle No. 5 which met with Mrs. Clyde Hall with Mrs. Roscoe Poplin and Mrs. David Clark as co-hostesses. Twenty-three members were pres ent and one visitor, Mrs. Ben Campen, Jr., of Red Springs. Mrs. N. H. Carpenter presided over the business session. Following the program an open forum was held. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs. Roscoe Poplin sang a prayer song accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Van Dillon, Jr. Miss Betty Allen and Miss Clar ice Oakley were hostesses to the Wesleyan Service Guild at the for mer’s home on Church Street. Miss Betty Alice Bowers, president, pre sided over the meeting. Miss Doro thy Jean Salmons conducted the devotional service. Miss Mabel Sale, program chairman, introduc ed the guest speaker, the Rev. J. W. Braxton, who used as his subject, “Trading With Life." Ap proximately 20 members and three visitors. Miss Doris Snow, Mrs. Ray Collie and Miss Bonnie Jean Moore, were present for the meet ing. At the conclusion of each of the meetings, refreshments were serv ed. Likin Valley Circle Meets The Carrie Woodruff Circle of the Elkin Valley Baptist Church met Monday evening with Miss Mattie Johnson and Mrs. Pete Collins with 14 members and two visitors present. Opening prayer was led by Miss Reba Johnson and Mrs. Jack De Borde, president, presided over the meeting. Miss Reba Johnson and Miss Virginia Mathis presented a very interesting program on “Christ— A Prophet Or A Savior.’’ Mrs. Susie Royall gave the clos ing prayer, after which a social hour was enjoyed with the hos tesses serving delicious refresh ments. Presbyterian Circles Meet The Women of the Presbyterian Church met during the past week ; as follows: Circle No. 1 met with Mrs. H. H. Hensel at her home on North Bridge Street with 14 members I present. Mrs. Glenn Snow, circle I chairman, presided over the meet ing. Mrs. Sam McKinney taught the Bible study. Circle No. 2 convened with Mrs. Ted Brown on Monday evening with 12 members and one visitor, Mrs. R. E. Ritchie of Charleston, W. Va., present. Mrs. Lewis Alex ander conducted the Bible Study. Luncheon Is Given Tuesday Mrs. R. V. C. Ritchie and Mrs. R. E. Ritchie of Charleston, W. Va., were hostesses at a luncheon at the former’s home on North Bridge Street, Wednesday at 1 o’clock. Arrangements of yellow chrys anthemums and magnolia foliage were used throughout the home, furnishing a pretty party setting. Luncheon covers were laid for Mrs. t. A. Leeper, Mrs. Lewis Alexander, Mrs. Hoke Henderson, Mrs. w. R. Wellborn, Sr., Mrs. Van Dillon, Sr., and Mrs. Joe Gwyn Bivins. Baptist Circles Convene Monday The circles of the Womans Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church met Monday as follows: Mrs. George Chatham and Mrs. C. A. Myers followed by the devotional service conducted by Mrs. Roscoe Wood who used as her theme “One Way, One Door.” "The Faithful Church" was the topic of the pro gram presented by Mrs. Jake Brown.
