The Cor.cord Standard knows pf a kitten that “has eight w^ell developed legs, two tail, two ears and one mouth, v/hich is seyeral teeth. It’s head is almost twice as large as any ordinary gro-'^-n cat.” Capt. J. V. Wall'Bce, of More- head City, has a duck that is Jkying black eggs. She laid flf- leon and is laying yet. The egg bears the a|3pearance of having boen dyed ' Some suggest that the duck has gone into mourning Oi'i account of the Fred Douglass le;-':islature. The Supi-eme Court have con- sti'iied the recent Act of the Legislature in regal'd to assign- rnents, mortgages, etc. as only ri siricting the right to executa assignments, mortgages, deeds in trust to secure ijre-existing debts. Mortgages etc. given to secure a debt contracted at the Lime the mortgage is executed &i’G valid as heretofore. The Yadkin Valley News says that Mr. Arthur Bledsoe, aged 74 years, met with a horrible death at Mr. Russell Key’s saw’ mill, in Eldora townshij:), Surry county, ten miles from Mt. Airy, last Saturday, He had just fas tened a saw log on the carraige when his coat was caught by the -saw and he was thrown across thfa saw. He lived six hours. A now game that is said to be ve i-y popular in society circles;this fieason is called the "onion social” and. is played as follows: The young ladie.s stand in a row: one of theiii bites a ^Jiece out of an piiion, and the fellow's pay ten cents to guess who bit it. The correct guessers kiss the other girls, while the'unsuccessful kiss the girl who bit the onion. The game evidently its strong points. Ee-wi from Abroad of Valuable Min eral Biscoveries in Surry County. l-'nrday, Mo.. S^r. An under-current of interest is s»id to be manifested among cer tain expert mineralogists and geologists in the West, over some samples of rock, taken recen-'ly from Surry county, N. C. One show's a rich quality of tin ore; another has some beautiful gar net gems embedded in a greenish | micaceous grp, nite. ■ It is claimed that this county is very rich in precious minerals; that an area of ten acres is covered on the surface with a solid body of black oxide of manganese; and that there is an unlimited amount of blue specular and magnetic iron srcs, to say nothing of tine clays mica and asbestos to be found thei’e: yet the county has never been prospected noi'- worked— not even a geological report has ever been made. i And how the fiisionists are paying (and a]>parently extract- i,ng much comfort from the state- menl) that the assignment law whicli is creating so much excite- meiit throughout the State-in fcrfering with business and bring ing hardship to so many people vyas the work of the Democrats; that a Democrat introduced the ^11, etc., etc. Oh! certainly. There were only about live Dem ocrat i in the Senate out of a membership of 50. and only a. bout 39 in Ihe House (after a lot had -been tiirnedout)out of amem bership of 120. But yet we shall i be hearing prost^tly that this i little handful of Democrats were; I'esponsible for all the wicked- ' ness of the Legislature. - Land-1 fnarli'. 1 TThen Baby M-OTsick, wp gave her Castorla. \Vheji site was a Child, aho criwl tor Ciuitorla. aen she became she clungj to Ca.'storia. sT^e had Children, she gave them Castorla. The North Wilkesboro Xews learns that the blockaders in the Traphill section have ordered twelve Winchester rifles for the express purjjose of annihilating the revenue officers who have been making some pretty success ful raids in that neighborhood, attd many predict that somebody will get hurt. There is said to be one editor in heaven. How he got there is not positively known, but it is conjectured that he passed himj self off for a minister and stepp^ ed in unexpectedly. When the dodge w'as di.scovered they search ed the realms of of felicity in all their length and breadth for a lawyer to draw up the necessary papecs for his ejectment, but they couldn’t find one, and, of course, he held the fort. James Ccmbs Seriously Injured. James Combs of Hunting Cr. last week received serious in- junies from a gun barrel in the hands of W. B. Roberts. It ap pears that Combs and his w^ife have been parted sometime. The Roberts family are her relatives and she Vi-as there. Mr. Combs went there and he and Roberts knocked him down with a gun and beat him terribly, It is said his skull is broken and that there is danger of his dying. Roberts has left.—Wilkesboro Chronicle. Fires in Wilkes. The dwelling and smoke-house of a farmer named W^'illiam Mc Neil were totaly destroyed by tire, in Lewis Fork tow'nship, last week. He w^as out in tho field plowing and his v/ife was at a neighbor’s house when the house, caught. About every thing they had to live upon w'as destroyed. At Camjibell's saw mill, a new dry kiln, containing about 4,000 feat of lumber, was destroyed by fire. One of ((he cross pieces on w'hich the lumber rested broke and let the plank down on the fire. The forest fires three miles west of Wilkesboro have done a good deal of damage. The Chron icle says that most t^f Berry’s Mountain has been burned over and a large quantity of fencing and tember de.stroyed. List Takers and Tax JiEsessors For Surry County.
