The President of !b Venezuelan Republic, While Ostensibly Spending the Summer in the Mountains, Has Been Secretly Vis iting th Governors of the Provinces and Consulting About t Ue Kalstng of an Arm; to Antagonize Great Rrltaln United States and Hi-Confederate Offi cers Who Would Join Him. Washington, Nov. 27. Information of a somewhiit sensational character with respect to the boundary dispute between Venezuela and Great Britain has leaked out here to-day. A letter written by a memberof President Cres po's cabinet to a friend in this country discloses the fact that President Cres po's abseuce from the seal of govern ment, which has attracted some atten tion, had a purpose in view. He has been cautiously sounding the Governors of the different provinces of the republic as to the forces which they could put into the-field in case of war. Assur ances were eiven that a weli equipped army of 100 000 men could be mobilized in case the President should determine upon a movement against the British Guianian settlers, on what is claimed to be Venezuelan territory, with a view to driving them back to the boundary, which Venezuela chums to be hers, namely, back of the Kssiquibo river. Whiie only part of tqis force would be necessary for the purpose the large army of 100 (00 men, Cre.-po believes, would be necessary to meet the coun ter attack which iht British Guianians. with the aid of Great Britain, would undoubtedly msike in return for Vene zuela's agressive movement. President Crespo has been absent from Caracas since the heated term be gin last summer. lie was understood to be at his country home in the moun tains, about 80 miles from the capital Some surprise has been manifested that he should have remained away from tbe capital for so loos a period, th& m.re especially as several members of his cabinet tendered their resigna tions a month as;o. li is now explained that President t respo has spent only a part of this time in the mountains, and that the remainder has been occupied in the manner indicated. A member of Congress, from the North west, who arrived in Washinston this morning, brings with him applications from five ex-military men of promi nence in his State for commissions in the Venezuelan army, in the event of hostilities between that country and Great Britain, and it is asserted that many ex-Confederates stand ready to volunteer in the Venezuelan army if war should break out between the South American republic and England. Kun-z Johnson, occurr d at the resi dence of the bride's father at noon to day. Tbe ceremony was performed by Car dinal Gibbons, who arrived from Balti more for that purpose. The wedding took place in the drawing-room, which was beautifully decorated for the occa sion, the principal flowers being white chrysanthemums. The bride was dressed in white duchesse satin, trimmed with lace, and carried a bouquet of or chids She entered the drawing-room i n the arm of her father, and the bridal party took their position in the front bay window, which was a bower of lowers from fior loceiiing. Marion is to have a bank, with a cap ital of $10,000. The Statesville Landmark says that Congressman Linney, of "de ate," has appointed Mr. E. ripencer Blackburn, of Ashe, his private secretary. The Wilmington Messenger learns that Capt. S. A. Ashe will discontinue the State, tbe pub'ication of which he began at Raleigh about a month ago. The fact is to be regretted. The News says Mrs. S. C. Jones, of Mt. Airy, kept an itemized statement of the expense of keeping a cow for a year. The cost was $52 and the sales of milk and butter, after a family of seven persons were supplied, amounted to $61 80. In this instance the cow paid a handsome profit. Tbe Washington correspondent of the Statesville Landmark says that the wife of Senator Butler has fixed up their Washington home beautifully. "It is furn'shed in exquisite taste. She will not entertain much until" alter Easter, but then she is going to give an entertainment and invite all the Tar Heels in town, together with the lead ing politicians in the nation." FUSION IN NORTH CAROLINA. Mr. Settle Says It Will Continue and That There Is No Hope for the Democrat. Washington Special to Baltimore Sun. Representative Settle, of North Caro lina, has arrived in the city and is ac companied by Representative Pearson, a new Republican member from that State. To a representative of the Sun Mr. Settle said, concerning political af fairs in his State: "There is an iron-bound compact be- J tween the Republicans and the Pot u j lists, which will continue to prow stronger, regarding State offices. The two larties have become so thoroughly united with regard to State affairs that party lines are not considered at all, and the combination is the fusion party pure and simple. There are no indica tionsof disruption, and no factional di visions. We will work together and vote together for the control of the State, without letting any jealousies in terfere with our success. There is ab solutely no chance that North Carolina will ever go Democratic again in a State election as lone as the present po litical conditions exist. "But the combination will not be car ried into a national campaign Next year there will be three electoral tickeis in the field in North Carolina, the Re publican, the Populist and the Demo cratic, and the Republicans will win. Of this I have not the slightest doubt. There are more Republicans in the State than Populists and more Populists than Democrats. The Populist party is made up almost entirely of men who were formerly Democrats, and it has so deplettd the Democratic ranks, that there is absolutely no prospect of Dem ocratic success." KILLED 10G WITH MACHETES. A Band of Guerrilla Almost Extermin ated Ity Insurgents. New York, Nov 27. After surrounding the band, Rios ordered a machete charge, and the cavalry rode down on the doomed men with cries of vengeance. Scarcely a third of the guerillas escaped alive. ON AND WITHOUT PAINTED The people of Charlotte lenow a good thing when they see it and it has taken them but a short time to recognize in the Observer Printing House one of the best of good things hence they are pushing it along, until now, at the end of one year, their liberal patronage has enabled us to reach "The Top RoMinid on the Ladder I" We can assure them that we appreciate their favors, and during the coming year we propose to work harder than ever to please our customers, and would remind our business men that in giving us their work they are help ing themselves. We have a large force employed in cur office, and have a large mail order business that brings money to Charlotte, and this money is spent here among our merchants and others; so don't send your work away from home when you can now have it done just as well and as cheap (or cheaper) than elsewhere. We hope in a short time to make new and valuable additions to our plant. ' Send us your orders. We guarantee the best work and lowest prices. OBserver Printing House. R. E. BLAKEY, Manager.
