MAY 22. 1880. TUB LOTTERY AND TUB fXOL.S. Under this bead Col. A. K. He ctare, who hia been the most fear let and the ablest advocate of the suppression of the Louisiana State Lottery to the extent of being arrested once bv the lottery gaog in New Orleans, when on a visit to that city goes for the lottery and its patrons with gloves off, as niual. It is ecoerallv known that the officials of the Lottery have offer ed the State of Louisiana a cool million a year for twenty-five years for the privilege of selling lottery tickets to fools. It is general! understood that this offer is s proposition to divido the fools' money with the State for the priv ilege of fleecing the fools. In other words, the lottery .managers in the light of their past experience expect to gather in $50,000,000 of fools' money daring the next twenty-five Tears if the State of Louisiana will accept half the amount as a bribe for allowing them tb do it. The Legislature of Louisiana has thus thrust upon itself the respon sibility cf accepti: g or rejecting this offer of a partnership in the business of fleecing fools. That it should be rejected is tho unani mous opinion of honest men, but, unfortunately, honesty doesn't al ways control legislative bodies, and it is not at all impossible that the fool-fleecing partnership may be formed. Twenty-five millions of fools' money would save the State of Louisiana twenty five mil lions in taxes, and even honest men hate to pay taxes. ''But," as Mr. McClue say?, what a comment is this unblushing offer upon the excoeding foolishness of the lottery purchasing fools. To be publicly paraded in the news papera as willing and even anxious to give the lottery sharps cool two millions a year without return should, one would think, open the eyes of the fools. It probably will do nothing of the kind, for the fool has not changed his natare since it aliration of the House since the Mr. Wileon. of West Vinrinia. car- I.. - - ' revolutionary LecomDton methods "ed more weight than the sworn counted the country by the dying "?, throes of Bourbon Democracy, and history is likely to repeat itself expressed by Mr. Bynum, in meovcrinrow oi me revoiuuon- mar tnoso wno endorsed tuen arv partv dow as it repeated itself mn were entitled to as little a I ... . a aa, ... n 1858-00 credit as tne man Himself, will re ceive general approval as entirely It is indeed gratifying to note joet and accurate, and yet it is for a -111 . a a that the increase in grain exports ,QCU "1BfaKe tni-i&nguage from this port since the beginnir.g SJ.MiT of the current year is still main- that Mr D u draped before tained, The increase is mostly in the bar of the House aad subject corn, ot which over thirteen rail- to tne ignominy or a vote of pub- lions of bnshela havp tarn r-jnortcd 110 censure. , f Jt since January 1, as agsinet less than The Democratic min bntj very two minions oaring me same ,heir Mgociate . n nBlt to them period in 1689.
