I O S E ROBINSON rim ( ttu rott Cfa af (Htdrtm. y. ' i 4CUm Mmtfr OJLD8HOKD. N C. MAKCH W SOME nFLtX7T10.S. Qivrn a good toil, t wit, lib eral constitution ana Hw, a ge nial climate and intelligent, in dustrions and economical co'l( and jou would confiMentlj predic for such a coontrj prosperity and pleutj. Vet with eucli a country and DeoDle we do not realize the fulfillment of this prediction. It it the part ot wisdom on the tart of our ioople, then, to fctrivc to ascertain the cause of this anom- ilj. There are three causes to be found in our national legislation that in part account for it These are the tariff, the pensions and the financial legislation of the nationa uongres. uur peopio lavor a change in all three of these, there fore, they need no dissertation from us as to their dntj in this respect. It is within the rango of possi bility that relief in none of these can be attained within the next decade, and in the meanwhile it would be well for us to consider whether there is not some relief for us, not dependent upon Fed eral legislation. It is demonstrated by reaeor, and sustained by observation and experience, that a people wbc convert their grass and grain into flesh will grow independent and rich, sooner than a 'people who sell their grass and buy their meat. This rule will hold good through out the whole range of industries T 1JL- II .1 a r ii woniu oe wen, increiore, lor our people to use their own pro ducts, raise their own pork, beef and butter, to grind their own flour and make their own carts; in fact, to manufacture everything we need, the manufacture of which is not beyond our capital and skill. We may bo mistaken, but we think that there is among our people a rivalry and lack of co operation and absence of method in our system of internal improve ments, well calculated to retard our material progress. It may be that these difficulties are to be met with Among all people, but we expect not Among our people, if there is a market for the products of one establish men t there is sure to be two or three establishments to meet the demand. A town mav ior j ears be wRhont ample hotel accommodations, and if a public spirited man erects a hotel that wholly meets the requirements, some one eke will be almost sure to erect another, and a larger one, to the loss and detriment of both. Daring the early development of our State, towns sprang up at different points, on account of their advantageous situation and favor able surroundings, and the chief end of our railroad construction and management, since, and espec ially ot late year, baa been to des troy these towns, and to erect other to the general detriment of the prosperity of the whole. Instead of nourishing and earing for our planta until they grow into full-grown treea,we are continually setting out new ones and neglect ing the old, so that neither the new or the old can come to ma turity and a full fruitage. We believe that the capital that baa been sunk in oor State by the starting of new, private industries, where the old fully met tho de- "X'lIK 1 A.KUI "S. J wroDC8 18 for our people in their 'private enterprises to exhibit a greater liberality and a more gener ous spirit, and fur the State to prohibit tLe construction of rail roads which have for their rxpres purje the injury, or which will probnb'y rtfu't in injury to exist" ing town. We hurt- even hoard a gentle man wl.o occupied one f the highfft otiicts in the gift of our people, and who has no cause or inclination to puss liari-h judgment, say that this spirit of nnget;ero..s rivalry was even cirried so for as to effect the conduct of our ope towa d each other in th ir persona relations. From which fact argued that it wae almost impossible for a man in this State to rise t tho greatest heighU; and there was lack of sympathy, concert and business intercouise between ou people and different sections of on Mate, which resulted in our btate being designated as a strip of land between two Slate. No i articular circumstance -no special instance lias given rise to these rt flections; they are simply the expre.-uion of imprcsMons that iave grown upon us from years o somewhat clcse obs4vft4ion. If these thins arc true it is the duty of every true son of North Carolina not to conceal tho (acts, but candidly to acknowledge them and to strive in every wsy to remedy them. K tTrcta oflh Mi K In ley Tariff. An Allentowr, Pa., pres dis patch laconically says: "Tho Lt high Iron Company yesterday re duced tho wages of its employes 10 per cent." When the McKiuley tariff bill was passed, one of the leading and most forcible arguments used in its behalf was that it would benefit the iron manufacturer, and con sequently their employes by keep ing up the price of iron nnd the wages of the workmen. IIow lalso is such a promise, this simple announcement from Allentown is but o ic of the alm' t daily instances. A high protect it tariff, ruinous 'and oppressive to tho groat masses of tho people, has never yet and will nover -benefit tho American workingman. This heretofore has been a siron s n: sung by Republican politician t.i the workingmon ot the North, nnd with great effect in the national elections, but tho time is pnst when they can be longer gulled by such fallacies. Fac's are stubborn thing-", and 6uch ir. formation as is contained in this Allentown dispatch is only too frequent and too impressivu to be read without a passing thought by tho workingmen ot America. Mr. Blaine and the other master minds of the Republican party have long since discerned this fact. and hence we see him indua triously hunting for other and freher material with which to go before the country in '92.. With his always admirable perspicuity he has hit upon Reciprocity as a tub to throw to tho whale: but ho and his party will learn in '92 that the Democracy and Mr. Cleveland have too long worked for and advocated these same prin ciples to allow them to be assumed by the Republican leaders as a guise to catch votes Reciprocity is but another name for the removal of the tariff em bargo npon this country; and while we all appreciate Mr. Blaine's ifforts in this behalf, he must not tc allowed to steal our Democratic thunder.
