Though we bare already more miles of railway than all the rest of the world combined, railroad construction is prococdiog at a greater rate than it has gone for several year9 past. The Riilway Age is a reliable and conservative authority on this subject. At the beginning of last year it predicted that something over 4,000 miles of railway would be built in 1899. The actual figure were 4,588 miles. We are therefore confident that the estimate of The Rtlway Age for this year may be relied upon ab approximately correct: It gives the following sum mary of new railroads, mileage projected and already under con struction: Line. Miles New England States 13 447 Middle States 112 2,54 South Atlantic States 117 9,752 Gulf and Miss. Val. States. 113 0,780 Central northern states.. . 112 6,02a Paciflcatates 108 0,377 Commenting on this table The Railway Age said: "We do not undertake to say that all cf tbia mileage will be built; in fact, it is certain that much of it never will bo. I is an easy matter to tike oat a charter for a new company, but it is quite another thing to raise the money wan wmcn 10 puna ice roaa. Many of the tuartera cover prac tically parallel line, and it is im possible to tell which stand tbe best show of being carried to com pletion. Some will never get be ...J 11. . ttt-- . t.rt- yuuu vuu prtmiuiu&rj stage, wuwe others will make some surveys and probably do a little grading, with the hope of tecnriog local aid and then disappear from pub. lie notice. . . . If the same ratio be applied to 1900 (as to 1899) there will be 5,000 miles of road com peted during the current year, and it will not be surprising if the fig are exceeds that amount." In spite of the fact that steel rails have about doubled and that everything else necessary to rail way construction has mono up very much, it is certain tb.it tbe new railroad mileage this year will cx coed that of any single yt ar since 1890. This is one of the most con vinciog proofs of the prosperity of tbe country and the confidence of capital in its future development. it will be seen that a great deal more than half the projected mileage is in the South. The Siuth is by far tbe most hopeful section of tbe country and tbe one that is making the most rapid progress. Have You Tried Mother's Friend?
