Consul - General Uooduow, writing from Stiangba1, dispels some eroneous impressions wild regard to the magnitude of Ori ental competition in tbe cotton manufacturing trade. The arti cle refers to a cotton mill at Han kau, in which it is alleged, only Chinese labor is employed at wages averaging 1.75 per month. The mill has 34.0OU spin dles and 700 looius, and makes good yarn. Other mills, it is said, are located at Shanghai. The real facts about cotton manufac tures in Chiua, says Mr. Good now, are these: The mill in liankau has discon tinued weaving clotb, as it could not meet the competition of for- eign piece goods. Tbe looms are bemg taken out and are being re placed by spindles. In Shanghai there are 750 looms running. It is claimed that these are now (but only very recently) making a coarse sheeting at a profit. The cost of making this sheet lng is fully os much as the mau facture of the same grade of cloth costs in America. Instead of wages averaging 11.75 per month, tbe cheapest coolie la borer receives 0 Mexican (;! gold) per month; carders aud spinners receive to 30 Mtxi can ($12 to If 15 goid) per muniti; engineers and weavers receive 125 to $00 Mexican ( 10 to ;ij gold) per month. Wagt s have risen very fast in the treaty ports, with the building of mills and the establishment of the for eign businesses and are maintain ed at the higher level. The labor, however, is less ef- tective man trie American lab ir. The American weavers accomp lish two to three times and Am- viiviau epiuucis a t least lour times the results attained by corresponding Chinese workmen in the same time.
