JAN. 11. 1901 WAB AGA1XST TRUSTS Iq an Ohio town the Standard Oil Trust is practicing its accus tomed methods upon a rival. By gathering extortionate profits from the many it is able to cru&b a riral by uuderselling it. Says a recent dispatch from Cleve land: "The Pennsylvania Oil Com pany oas been selling on lor a few months at the same prices as the titandard. Now the Stan dard has started fight and dropped from 10 and 12 cents to 7 cents a gallon. It is said that the dealers have orders to sell the Standard oil at 2 cents a gal loo lower than the Pennsylvania is offered for, no matter what that price may be." This is better than blowing up an opposition plant with dyna mite, although it does not differ in principle. It simply shows what trusts are, and what they were organ zad to accomplish, namely, to crush competition. The plow trust, reoently or ganized with a oapital of $67, 000,000, will pursue similar meth ods. All trusts do, the .Standard Oil being a pattern for all the rest of the uile blood. The crush ing out of all competition, so that the home market oan be ex ploited at will, paying in many cases losses on export trade there being one price for the home consumer, and another and lower price for the foreign con sumer is the programme for all trusts. Representative Pettus proposes to protect the people of Alabama from such robbery and extortion. His bill is carefully drawn. He has given much time and ttudy to it. It will be fought on all imaginable grounds. Calamities untold will be predicted of it, bat not a calamity has followed the Texas bill or the Ar'tansas bill or tne Ai ssiesippi bill, and none would follow the pat sage of the Pettus bill. The calamitios exist in the fertile imaginations of well paid lobbyists and purchased pa pers only. If the people want protection from tbe organized robber trusts the will see that their representa tives support the Pettus bill. If they prefer to pay two prices for articles of daily ubo and necessity, they wll let the lobbyists control legislation on this subject, thereby defeating the Pettus bill. Tne fight is on, and if the people of the country will wake up tbe trusts can be curbed and controlled in any State. Thousands Sent Into Exile.
