A very interesting contest is going on in Texas where the own ers of the great Lucas well are endeavoring to kep the Standard Oil Company from b curing a firm hoi 1 upon the new field. The owners of the well are Penney I- vaoians who know full well what a tyrant the Rockefeller concern iS and they have determined, bo it is stated, to market their pro duct without its aid. For this pur pose pipe lines are to be laid to and storage tanks built at Beau mont and Port Arther. Fortunate ly the distance to the seaboard is short, and all the work needed is well within their capital. The oil from the Lucas well is very plainly fuel oil, and the yield of the new field, if large, will give a wide section of country cheap fuel. It is a section devoid of coal, but lull of manufacturing ambition. If Tixas and Loui-innn have secured cheap fuel thosu States can spin the r own cotton to their own great profit They can hull their own rice, and refine their own sugar. The yield is large, and all the oil tlat gasher wells can furnish will be needed, for there is net a pound of coal in either Louisina or Texas. The handling of the new supply becomes therefore a matter of general interest, The keeping of the Standard Oil monop oly out relates to the pros perity of all relates to indus tries that touch all, The contest becomes therefore one of deep importance to the two States Competition is better than mo noply in every case, and es pecially when the fuel supply is involved. The State of Texas is fully awake to the dangers of monopoly, and the chances' are very good that one oil field will be kept out of the grasp of the worst, monoply the country has ever known.
