Congress has authorized five new battleships, and the nava bill now before thai body pro poses two more with a displace meet of 15,000 toos each. These are to be the largest and most powerful fighting machines afloat. It is proposed to arm each of these floating steel-clad forts with batteries or four twelve inch, four eight-inch and sixteen aixsioch steel guns, any of which shall b3 capable of penetrating the armor of any warship now in service or afloat. If this new fleet, with its irre sistible batteries, can do what the naval experts claim for it. there will be a choice lot of war ships that will be candidates for the junk pile very shortly. It is hardly likely that any naval power will care to repeat the ex- perienceof Spain in pitting a naw iust a little out of date and u.ur.j.u o;D t,, ,.uJ !... ; M i A I power. Our own navy will con sist largely of outdated vessels, J according to this standard, and we shall be compelled to build new auu wuie yuwcuui w. vco- sela ContinuOUSlv.
