C, SEPT. 1901 THEFT IX HIGH CHICLES. S. Ct. Squier, secretary of the United States legation, bought at aaction a wonderfal collection of porcelains', bronzes, wood car? iogs, ivories, paintings and ether art objects, all the ;, products of great Chinese gartiets throughout many, many centuries. He bought enough to fill "eeveral railway cars," and he has oflered as a gift this unsurpassed collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art of of New York, and Director di Oesnola and Curator Story's out givings indicate that the gift will be accepted. These articles are loot taken, from palaces and houses in help less China. Mr. Squ'er knew the articles were stolen property when he bought them. "The commercial . experience" they passed through was simply a transfer from the theif to the re ceiver. Mr. Squier cannot plead ignorance or innocence, for he ,was part and parcel of the allied -machine that rendered China helpless while thelves of ail sorts wider his eyes robbed her s The v Squier collection is . a . parta -small but - valuable part of the : biggest looting the world t has ever known; i '.-' The New York institution has an easy conscience because Na poleon looted Italy in order to enrich the Louvre, and England acting as a pal of Turkey looted Greece in order to fill her great museum with antiquities. There are examples enough of looting in past centuries ;but it wasfond- ly hoped that the twentieth cen tury would rise aboye it. The New York case shows it cannot.
