GOLDSBORO N C, SEPT. 1901 CUE SPIRIT OF TOLERATION Senator Hear, in his address at the Worcester memorial exer cises, expressed this sentiment: "We shall, I hop?, learn to mod erate the bitterness of political strife and to avoid the savage at tack on the motive and character of men who are charged by the people with public responsibili ties. This fault, while I think it is already disappearing from or. dinary political and sectional coutroversy, seems to linger still among our scholars and men of letters. The moral is not that we should abate our zeal for jus tice and righteousness or our con demnation of wron?,but only that we should abate the severity of our judgment of the motives of men from whom we differ." This is well said. Senator Hoar Himself, not many years back, Was ene of the bitterest and most intolerant partisans and rankest South haters in public life. His famous attack on Jefferson Davis in the Senate some twenty odd years ago was vindictive in the extreme, but tbe reply of Sena tor Lamar, of M;ssissippi, was most scathing. The great Miss issippian reverted to Greek my thilogy and compared Senator Ttai to the vulture that nlucked n 1H mil . - . tht latter was chained to a rock. This incident became historical, But of recent years Senator Hoar has abated bin bitterness and sectionalism and like thous ands of other thinking Ameri cans from whose breast the fires of sectional strife and toleration of honest differences of opinion. This is a sentiment which is growing very rapidly. The tra gic and pathetic death of Presi dent McKinley furnished occa slon for a striking lesson in this regard and one whose beneficent influences will not soon disap pear.
