Brogden, who has just completed a bn-inees course, including steno graphy and typewriting, at rough k&epsie, N. Y., is at home again. The alarm of fire sent in from box 91 last night, a few minutes after the alarm from WebbtoWn, was occas ioned by the turning over of a lamp at the home of Bev. A. B. Crnmp- ler. Very little damage was done. The friends of Mr. F. K. ' The county Sunday school con vention now being held at Salem church Is being largely attended and , the exercises and addresses are in teresting, instructive and edifying. . To-morrow will be the bit; day and the attendance is expected to be - overflowing. Our good friend and venerable townsman Capt. Dan'l Beid. the ef- ( fldent steward of the State Hospital, celebrated his 88th birthday on Thursday. He is in fine spirit and his health is good, the Argus if giaa (o chronicle, and we wish him many nappy returns of his birthday. The first bale of new crop cotton j on this market came in to-day. It was from the farm of Mr. Offle Sut ton across the line, in ftamiwn county, and sold lor 11 cents, being miner green, iiweigned 670 pounds and was boueht bv Mr. v. Whosoever Goes Forth For the Strife of Life Without This -V Light Has Little Pur 1 ; pose Ahead. Lead, Kindly Light, amid, ta' en circling gloom Lead thou me on ( The night is dark and I am far from home: Lead thou me on. Keep thou my feet: I do not csk to see The distant scene one step enough forme. Did you observe the wondrous light yesterday evening in the west ern sky, the "molten golden glory," raved with aaure, merging and melt ing away through the sunset gates? It took but little effort for the wings of the soul to follow it out beyond earth's sight, into that Infinite Light that "enliehteneth every man that cometh into the world" that shone in the darkness of old, "and the darkness did not comprehend it"; the Light that is Love; the Light that is God for "God is Love." And whosoever goes forth full- belted for the strife of life, or whoso ever comes to the end of it ail.where the last dim shadow falls, and ha oot this Light cannot "stand firm," and perhaps too late his soul would penetrate the smoke and dust of battle or pierce the veil dropped before his fading eyes for one guid ing ray from the Kindly Light. Sometimes Inarticulate, maybe, sometimes clear as the Angelus bell when all is still; sometimes in low ami trembling whisper, sometimes like thunder of Olyiupu; sometime? unsyllabled by maiden lips, some times shouted by man as the battle- cry of his soul in some form the Master has taught that every human hevt shall plead, Kindly Light,Iead thou me on! The illustrious Cardinal Prince ol the Church whose divine inspiration gave to the worm me awumess hymn to the Kindly Light, which has cheered a hundred million hearts, offered it up as a prayer to the Supreme Love that is Lord of all. of Presidents and Kings, of rich and poor, who all alike do but await the inevitable hour when the Light shall be most essential. Morris Gives a Char acterlstic Interview. Raleigh Post A man approached a neighbor and asked him if he knew the difference between the words "recollect" and "remember." The neighbor gav it up. "Well, I'll tell you," said the first speaker. "I recollect loan Ing you a certain sum of monoy, but I don't remember that you ever paid It back." Col. John R. Morris, of Golds boro, who passed through Raleigh yesterday afternoon on his way home, gave an even more graphk description of the difference between the words "abhorfnee" and "ad miration." Col. Morris was returning from a tri p th rough the northeastern tobacco cotton belt of the State, and remark ed to a Post man that the business de pression is not as great in that part ot the State as it was two weeks ago. "It is noticeable in the fact," he said, "that merchants are now placing orders they have been de ferring for some time, awaiting to ee further Into crop conditions. The cotton crop appears to be very fine in that part of the State, while other crops are also good. The depression has been caused by the prevailing low prices of tobacco. "Nearly all the tobacco farmers are also cotton farmers," said Col Morris, and their abhorrence of those who have lowered the price of to bacco is qualified by their admira tion for Brown and his associates who have raised the price of cotton.' FARMERS' MEETING. At the Court House In This City To-Day Much Interest Mani fested In the Cause. As we go to press this afternoon the meeting of the farmers of Wayne county, under the auspices of the State Farmers' Association, Is In vogue in the court house. The attendance Is large, all sections of the county being represented in goodly numbers, and there is a gen eral Interest manifested that means business. . , :-- The Argus will contain a full ac count of the'meeting next week.'
