Work has begun on the Masonic Lodge building and the new rest donee of Mr R II Smith, and they are beirg rapidly pushed forward. When completed those two build iugs will add much to the Improve ment of our town. But when Is the work on the new church to be com menced? On Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock there will be an election of officers and teachers held at the school house by the Sunday school mera bera. Miss Bettie Exum, of Vermont, is the guest of Mrs M C 8 Cherry. Mr C B Hatch made a business trip to Wilmington on Monday. Mi-wtes Leila and Margaret Aaron lent Thursday night in Goldsboro. Mrs Shade Wooten, of Lad range, is the guest of her son MrSA Wooten. Mr Henry E Cox is veiling his old home and his friends are delight ed to see him. Mrs Thos McGee and Mrs Geo A McGee are visiting relatives and friends here this week. After an extended visit to Snow HUI and Beaufort, Miss Sudle Dee Maxwell Is at home again. Messrs W F English and J A Westbrook have returned from Southport and report a delightful trip. Miss Frank English left to-day for Greensboro, where she will be a student at the Greensboro Female College. Quite a large party last night en gaged in an exciting fox chase and 'tis needless to add that a large fox was caught. Miss Ella Lenard, of Baltimore, arrived to-day and will fill the posi tion as millner in Martin's store, her iriends are glad to have her back. Miss Richmond 14 again this fall with Blount 4 keel, and has man beautiful creations in millinery which she will show in a few days to the admiring woman-kind. A large party from here, on Thurs day last, went up to Goldsboro to hear "Thelma" and enjoyed it very much, all voting it the best play they have seen in the Messenger Opera House for quite a while. Cards are out announcing the mar riage of Mr Chas Southerland of this place to Miss Emmea Hearne of Albemarle. Miss Hearne last year held a position in the Mt Olive Graded School, and made many friends who will be glad Indeed to have her In their mlist again. A sad burial took place here Mon day afternoon, when the remains of Dr Emmet Kornegay were Interred in Myrtle Grove Cemetery, beside the gravef his parents. Dr Kor negay died last Friday in Worcester, Mass., and his death was a shook to his many relatives and friends in this town. Quite a number from Kinston and Goldsboro accompanied the remains here and were present at the funeral. We are glad to see a Mt Olive young lady thus highly spoken of In WesleyanFemale College Notes from Macon, ua, in the Atlanta Constl tutlon: "Among other arrivals at college is a new teacher of piano and voice. Miss Mary Estella Kornegay, a most charming young Christian woman, as well as an excellent mu sician and teacher. Miss Kornegay has been very highly educated at seminaries of music in North Caro lina, and has taken a two year course at the New England Conser vatory of Music at Boston." While we are not In politics at al we are on earth, and anyone who can read the signs of the time knows that vMaor Charles, M. Steadman is going to be the next gevernor of North Carolina. A brilliant man with a clean record and scores of friends. Nothing that they can say of him need be said. He has spent his life In North Carolina and now. in the afternoon of it, the shadows fall but upon the stainless pages of a Book of Life illumed by charity, humanity and intelligence. Major Steadman has been weighed in the balances and never found wanting'. He has been through the crucible- stood the heal of the blow-pipe of politics bravely walked the ways of men in busy haunts and no Nem eels has ever cried him shame. He has lived in the West and in the East and is essentially of North Caro lina. Guilford temporarily claims him but he is of the state and the state will be proud to honor herself in honoring him. There Is a trained nurse with him now and we all hope he may soon be out again. Mr Geo D Pate, of Carteret county. was here last weak visiting relatives and friends.
