N. a. SATURDAY EVENING. NOVEMBER 21. 1903. NO 38 TlfECLD RELIABLE mm Jttoiuley Puro THERE JS HQ SUBSTITUTE THE A. A N. C. LEASE. Another Proposition Will Be Made the Governor Who Constitute the Syndicate Next Month's Meeting of Stockholders. The proposition to leaso the A. 4 N. C. Railroad, didcitwed so fully by the pn-w of theBtate some weeks ago, and coupled as It wax with a pro vision of extending that road fifty miles westward, within the next Ave years, to touch the great Heaboard i-ystern, Is, in our opinion, one of ihe most fortuitous opportunities that ha come not only to Ooldsboro out to aU of eastern North Carolina in half a century for greater physical development; while as a purely fl uauiial proportion the Htate and private stockholders of the A. A N. 0. R. it. Co. aro offered and assured something they have never experi enced before, nor can hope to realize otherwise for years to come, via: a permanent, profitable, increasing an nual dividend on their stock for the term of lease, with proffered safe- 'niaintuinod in as good physical con dition as when received and so re turned to the company at the expi ration of the lease. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the A. A N. 0. R. K. Co., at Newborn, in September, fhe private stockholders, by an al most unanimous vote, endorsed the pttdlng proposition to lease their rod, hut m the Governor had de clined to consider it favorably on be half of the Ht&te'e stock, a resolution was adopted to hold a Hpeei.il meot ing of the stockholders in Newbern oa Dece nbcr 10; that In the mean time the Governor might more ma turely consider the conditions and situation and the interests and wishes of the private stockholders all of whom, nearly, favor the lease and the ethics of the compact be tween them and the State. It has been rumored that the Sea board was really the syndicate (In disguise) that is bidding for the A. A N. C. R. R. lease; but in truth the syndicate making the proposition is composed of public spirited clticens of our own section, anxious for the development thereof for their own weal and, that those coming after them may hold their memories in grateful regard as publlo benefactors of their own time and posterity. These gentlemen are as follows: Messrs. T. A. Green, President Citizens Bank, Newbern, N. 0.; W. B. Blades, , President Blades Lum ber Co., Newbern, N. C; W. A. Mills, President Lumber Co., Troy, N. C; N. 0' Berry, President Enter prise Lumber Co., and Whltevllle Lumber Co.; Lovlt nines, Presi dent Dines Bros' Lumber Co.,W. Zachry, Manager Standard Oil Co. Norfolk; Jno. A. Mills, President II. A C. P. R. R., Raleigh; .11. L. Finlayson, National Oil Company, W. W. Mills, President Carolina Trust Co., Raleigh; Geo, A. Nor. wood, Jr President National Bank.of Goldsboro; Dr. A. IL Abbott, Ra leigh; V. U. Bnydeo, Raleigh. It Is now up to the' Governor to ay whether the proposition of these gentlemen to lease and extend the Road shall be accepted. The canal problem seems to be solved In every respect except the digging of it, " Joe Cannon la now engaged In holding down hie esteemed col leagues. " .
