The tariff-fed Industries are begin ning to assert their power over the tariff bill. Castro abuses his Uncle Sam, but he moves ou just the same. He Is now sojourning In Paree. The Callfornlana are called up on to eat 20,000 tons of last year's raisins No one else wants them. The Sultan's wives may be waiting for new dresses from Paris before they are ready to abdicate. Oklahoma mobs are no respecters of persons. They stand ready to hang anybody from tramps to millionaires. Dispatches would indicate that Mrs. Donald McLean was the Joseph G. Cannon of the Daughters of the Amer ican Revolution. The dispatches from Africa omitted the statement that Mr. Roosevelt shook hands with the engineer after that ride on the cow-catcher. Senator Tillman says that divorce doesn't exist In South Carolina. That state has never succeeded In separat ing from Senator Tillman. An income tax would be voted by the country 10 to 1 In Congress it may be defeated, and so may the men who assist in defeating it there. After serving nine years as fugi tives Governor Taylor and his associ ates are again free to return to their native state. They were not greatly missed at home. The D. ' This Is indeed trite saying, but its truth is abiding and in its possibili ties 'lies the South's advance to yet greater things than have been accom plished or even dreamed or. Th rnitnn nlant stands unrivaled In the agricultural world. It accom plishes more, travels further, and is fuller of possibilities than any otner plant in the whole range of cultiva tion. To becin with, it well-nigh clothes the world. All nations and all classes wpar cotton Roods. Some wool and some silk are used, but cotton is king In the matter of apparel. The seed, too, Is rich in uses. The oil that flows from the seed is ship ped far and wide and it is put in more forms than the farmer who grew it dreams of. Then there come the meai and the huljs, both of which are ex cellent feed for animals. And now they say 4,000,000 tons of mitnn stalk null) are to be turned into commercial paper, thus adding mil lions of dollars to the yield or our cotton fields to say nothing of the pa per mills that will be establisnea amid those fields. The truth is, the time seems to be near at hand when every cotton grow ing district will be deficient until it secures a cotton spinning and weav ing mill, an oil mill and a paper mm, with warehouses to hold the district's crop. The cotton plant would then do its full work in the South, and this Is what this section of the country should strive to inaugurate. HOWUO.XG! ECHO ANSWERS. Every day, under the Dingley pro tected combines., pools and trusts, the cost of living goes up up and there is no coming down again. There seems to be no limit in the upward direction. When it is not one staple food product, It is another, and some times a flock of them climb upward together, and every one of them be longs on the workingman's table, for it is the plain, substantial foods that are going up rather than the luxuries of the menu. A year ago, for example, flour in carload lots was worth but $5.45 a barrel. It Is now worth $7.60. Irish potatoes that were a month ago of fered in carload lots at 83 cents are now selling at $1.20 a bushel. In three months corn meal has been ad-! vanced 7 cents a bushel in carload lots. Cabbages that were worth $1.75 a crate in car lots last year are now selling at $2.70 a crate. Navy beans have gone up to $2.85 a bushel. A short time ago they were, offered at $1.90. Eggs are nearly GO per cent higher than they were one year ago. Coffee has been marked up 2 cents a pound. Bacon is 2 cents higher in price, so are hams. All other pork products are higher, and the stiff prices of beef are well known. Nearly every one of these Increases In the cost of living can be traced to DIngleyism and the monopolies and trusts it has fostered and promoted, and the party that passes a new bill without bringing relief to consumers will indeed have much to answer for at the poll. 1100 Reward. 1100.
