Briga dier-General Daniel II, Rucker, the oldest retired officer of the United States army, was born in Belleville, '. J., April 28, 1S12. In 1S37 he en tered the army as a second lieutenant of dragoons, and ten years later he reached the grade of captain. In his early military career he saw much service in warfare with the Indians in the West and Southwest. He served through the Mexican war, command ing a squadron at the battle of Buena Vista. His active career likewise cov ered the period of the Civil war; he was hrevetted major-general of volun teers. He continued in active service until 18S2, In wJilch year he was re tired for uge.
