Turkey and Tersia are finding the twentieth century a period of trouble and hardship. The Frenchman that Mr. Roosevelt put into the Ananias Club did not en Joy his promotion. Carrie Nation will raise ou her Ar kansas farm hickory hatchet handles. It is her best crop. The affair in Turkey was a compro mise. Abdul Humid lost his throne and kept his head. Fisherman Fatten prefers to angle for trout instead of suckers at this stage of the game. The gnus that Mr. Roosevelt shot are not dangerous animals, although they rank among big game. The boom at Beverly is already nrosnerinc. Summer capitals must make hay while the sun shtaies. It does not yet appear why Diaz wept when he was told that he must serve another term as President. tot no congressman who votes against an income tax think he can placate his constituents with garden seeds. It does not seem to be settled whether Abdul Hamid has 4.O00 wives, or only 40. The difference is very considerable. A railway running into Chicago gave each woman who bought a ticket a, box of candy until it was pro nounced rebating. The Standard Oil people carried their Texas fiue, $1,714,000, in an old coffee sack. They must have a ware house full of them. They are looking up reactionaries in Constantinople, and this country would be better off if the plan were adopted in ashington. The fear is that Mr. Roosevelt will return with a petulant liver. Rudyard Kipling says he has no chance to come home with a sound liver. HOXKSTY IS THE BEST POLICY. The most astute politician in all Europe, the man who has played one power against another thirty-three years, with remarkable success, has lost power at last. He has fallen be cause he intrigued against a constitu tion he had agreed to support. He has fallen, not because of any failure of his complex foreign policy, but be cause he had lost support at home, especially In the army. In his great game of playing both ends against the middle, the Hamid ian regime never failed to appeal to the fanaticism of the followers of the great Mohammedan faith. All told, those followers number about 175,- 000,000, or rather more than all the Protestants in the world. Because he was the head of all those religion ists, he was retained in the revolution of last July, but his capacity for In trigue has at length been his undoing. t r f 100 Reward. $100. All nations vie with each other in honoring the Wright brothers for their achievements in the use of heavier- than-air machines. They signalized their experiments at Rome by forcing the aeroplane over the grass by its own propellers until It sailed grace fully and swiftly into the air. No starting device whatever was used. and Wilbur Wright says all starting advantages will soon be abandoned al together. When it is known that au aeroplane can be started anywhere at any time a great advance in aviation will have been established. The truth is, the comiuest of the air is advancing much faster than the compiest of the water did for the lat ter covered centuries. It is coming on much faster than the locomotive did. for that consumed fully fifty years. It is coming on even faster than the au tomobile did, for the first ones were used twenty years ago, and ten years ago they were considered untrustwor thy, It has taken twenty years to bring automobiles fully up to the com mercial stage. The Wright type of aeroplane was put before the public last suiimxr, and the progress made since that time is marvelous. How soon the aero plane will become commercially available cannot exactly be foreseen. but the pace of the Wrights has been rapid and barring accidents it may continue to be so. They are studying the problem daily and as they work the year round the aeroplane which requires no roadbed and which is not in itself expensive may be rapidly de veloped. Hundreds of acute brains are at work, spurred on by the success of the Wrights, and the air may soon become as useful in a transportation sense to man as the water is. Dear Sir: 1 beg to thank you for your statement .handed me today, showing results , of .Mutual Lire Insur ance Company of New York, policy No. .32,424. which I took out with that company twenty years ago. The terms of the settlement set forth lu the statement anil offered me by The Mutual Life are eminently satisfac tory to mo; in fact, 1 did not expect to receive us liberal a settlement as your company offers in the final adjust ment.
