Peary may be at the north pole cn lovlne the climate as a summer re sort "C. Q. D." comes up from the Kan gas wheat fields, where 16,000 men are sorely needed. It Is a cold day in June when the Wrieht brothers cannot pick up a medal or two. i i One of the Gould children never married, and she la the best one of the entire lot of six. The days may be getting shorter, but that fact cannot be proven by the man who feels that he needs another nap.''. The lion skin market and the Taft second-term boom will both feel the return of Mr. Roosevelt to his native land. Farmer Jim Patten has pocketed his profits and he now has no opin ions to express on the course of the market.- Professor Foster's publishers are not trying to stop the controversy that has arisen over the professor's fam ous book. China now makes rails for her new railroads and will soon make her own rolling stock. She has the cheapest of labor. Transatlantic 'steamship records nvy be said to have been begun in 1840, when the Britannia crossed the sea In fourteen days. She was but 207 feet long, whereas the Lusltania of today is 760 feet long. The horsepow er of the Britannia was but 740 that of the Lusltania Is 68.000! The fol lowing table shows the successive re ductlons in New York to Queenstown records In recent years: D. . 7 . 7 H. 11 10 7 18 11 10 4 4 18 lfi 14 12 15 1876 Germanic, . .. . 1877 Brlttanlc 1S8( Arizonia . . 1882 Alaska. . . . . 1884 Oregon 1884 America . . .. . 1887 Umbria .. .. . 188 Etrui ia . . ... 1891 Majestic .. .'. . 1891 Teutonic 1892 City of Paris.. .. .. 5 1893 Champania 5 1894 Lucania 5 1 90S Lusltania .. .. .. .. 4 The growth of liners, both In length nid horsepower, Is remarkable. In 1S4S the average length of the twenty longest steamships was 230 feet : n 1881 it was 460 feet; In 1903 It whs M0 feet Today there are eleven vess's of 700 feet or over and two White Star liners building which are to be sr.O fi-tt long Once the Great Pastern, built In 1838, was considered the levi athan of the seas, and yet she was but 680 feet long and her horsepower was far Inferior to modern shls. Speed In the boiling seas calls for horsepower as well as displacement. The recent trip westward of the Mau retanla was done at an average speed of 30 1-4 statute miles an hour. A nautical mile is 6,080 feet, and a stat ute mile Is but 5,280 feet. A speed of twenty-five knots an hour means the expenditure of millions in building ships with greater displacement and vastly greater horsepower. Teachers' Examination. Dear Sir: I take pleasure in inclosing herewith my check for $66.93 and dividend voucher for $17.85, in payment of premium of $34.78 oa account of my contract, No. 190,769, for $3,000, and I wish to express to you my appre ciation of this large dividend. This is the second dividend upon an ordi nary life policy. The first dividend was paid at the end of the first year, which was also very satisfactory. The dividend of $17.85 is more thaD I expected. I am also well pleased with the 59th Annual Statement of this company and recommend it to anyone desirinr good, .afe life insurance, as I believe I am getting a square deal. Very truly yours, R.H. Bears the Signature The House of .Representatives on Thursday passed a bill appropriating $10,000,000 for the taking of the cen sus of 1910. No doubt the Senate will concur, and a conflict between the ' two houses . will in that way be voided. The chances are now that the next census will be taken under an old act, .which does not recognize civil . service examinations at all. The two 'houses cannot come to an agreement, and,- passage of an appropriation bill i'ure and simple probably means that the two bouses have agreed to disagree. After all, it cannot be said that the cumbersome civil service regulations fit the lease. The appointment of a temporary force cannot be conducted in that manner simply because men and women will not gt ready lor a civil ' service examination merely to hold an office for the brief term. The methods of former census years are not perfect, but nothing in the official service Is perfect.' The present cen sus dlrctor is an experienced man and enn be" trusted to select a competent .'temporary fcuVe- This seems to be the outcome of the entire matter. It was precipitated by a veto from Pres ident Roosevelt, and in the end no doubt the temporary patronage will be distributed among the states ac cording to population. $4.00 TO SOttFOLK, VA A XI) SE TCBJf-f2.; TO WILMIXUTOX, K C, AXD RETURN, YU ATLANTIC COAST LUTE.
