Glavis was dismissed from the government service from the depart ment over which Mr. Ballinger pre sides, but neither Mr. Ballinger no.- even the President could separate him from his pen. In a recent issue of Collier's he thus summarizes his charges against Secretary Ballinger "1 assert that the land office ordered In the Golden West all are in favor the Cunningham claims to patent If Mrs. Stetson had appeared in 1692 she might have been hung for practic ing witchcraft Champ Clark thinks the psychologi cal moment of the Democratic party is " about to arrive. of equal suffrage, and no suffragettes are needed to enforce It Hamburg, Munich and Baden have taken steps to secure an lntVu.-lan airship service next season. The dukes are not alarmed. They know that no house of lords has ever group and other Alaska claims; been abolished in England. J. J. A reversal of that decision on every point was ob tained from Attorney General Wicker sham. Had it not been for Mr. Wick- ersham's decision, every fraudulent Alaska claim would have gone to pat ent, These charges are really aimed at the President, for it is he who dis missed Glavis and who is engaged, to use Mr. Glavis' phrase, in the white washing of Mr. Ballinger. The ap pointment of Mr. Ballinger to the Cab inet was no doubt t mistake, Iriwev-i honest he may be. It was a mistake because he had been counsel for the Cunningham claims. The di. trt about the entire affair consists in the holding up of all the Alaska claims untll Congress can remake our land laws to suit the Alaska situation. It is too early to assert in accordance with a suggestion in Collier's that the Gug genneimes are in charge of the De partment of the Interior, but it is not early to change the laws so that the natural resources of Alaska and of the j far West will be kept out of the ham!?. ut ny trust IN THE HOME GOWAJCS PREPARATION It ttaohifc fcctioa alalrat pneumonia, colds, croon CMtba, punt and toreoru In lust am throat Rellma at once br destrormf the Inflammation and coofetoon. WHITNEY'S Sumptuous Production of KNIGHT A particularly interesting phase of the Monroe Doctrine is that one raised by the New York Herald in a recent editorial treating of our present and prospective relations with Canada and the desire of some Canadians which has lately been expressed that their country should build and maintain a navy. It appears that these, who seem to be not especially numerous, have n an effort to further their cause, con jured the spectre of a war between England and Germany and allegeJ that should these two peoples Germany might seize Canada. The Herald appears to regard war between Germany and England as a remote contingency, but said, never theless, that the . jingoes in both of those countries seem to be doing all they can to bring It about. The point especially interesting to the people of the United States, however, is that in the event of such war we should, In pursi ance of our traditionary policy, interior and aid the Canadians. 'ihe Herald said that the best bul wark Canada may have are the ninety - millii ns of people on this side of their iiordor, and that for them to build a navy wr.uld be ridiculous. Ther Is ao gainsaying that should any foreign power interfere with any pipie on IhH continent, thus violating the Vau K'o, Doctrine, that power would lind Itself engaged shortly In a war with the United States. There Is one thing In which the peo ple of this country of various political belief are agreed, and that is that the Monroe Doctrine Is sound. To attempt to violate it would be regarded In this country as practically tantamount to Prices 25, 50, 75, $1.00, and $1.50 an invasion of the United States. The fact that several hundred thou sand "citizens of the United States are now living In Canada makes it cer tain that were the Monroe Doctrine violated and Canada be menaced by an afgressive power the people of this country would clamor for interfer ence In her behalf.
