“‘Those trading
o paying only a
tax for the ex*
they are making.”
Lanier’s bill proposed:
1. That the State’s privilege
tax be increased from the pres
ent $200 a year to $G00 annually
for each redemption store.
2. That a 10 per cent trading
stamp lax be levied by the Slate
on each stamp dealer.
3. That a two per cent trading
stamp tax be levied by the State
on each merchant who issues trad
ing stamps to customers.
4. That each county be given
authority to levy a stamp dealer
privilege tax of $200 on each re
demption store in -the county; and
that each municipality be auth
orized to levy a $300 privilege tax
on each redemption store in the
municipality.
Lanier accused trade stamp deal
ers of “running a white-collared
flim-flam game in pretending to
give value for value, but in truth
all they are doing is either giving
nothing for something or nearly
nothing for much.” I
“The customer victims of this
national slot-machine racket sure
ly must not have considered the |
simple arithmetic of this hypnotic j
scheme which makes many think
they are getting something for
nothing.” said Lanier.
He called the dealers “economic
parasites whose operations are
reaching such staggering pro
portions that they will soon be
come in North Carolina the
P’lorida beach type of government
termite.”
