' This hat been a famous year for ' fy turning of horse flesh in tome of the large cities of the country 45 haying perished in a New York city lire yesterday morning. We would call special attention to the advertisement of the Swift Specif io remedies, which appears in this pa per, and the more so because we bear , .recently of a remarkable ear which the medicine has wrought in one of the adjoining oountiee. ;; ' V - . People were restless under the in tense heat last night, but towards morning cool breeze sprang up, and the saoe people rose up and you ju ought to have seen them eat breakfast 1 Tou would'nt have, thought tVy were .-the same people. . We met several members of the .press last night at the depot. They 1 " were returning from- the Press Con tention ' which was belJ at Hender nville. We saw Mess. W much regret the utter impoaaibility of our personal attendance. In the Presbyterian church to night the S. School Teachers' meet ing will be held at 7 I 3, and the S. School Singing Practice at 8 1 3 o'clock. People who read of the volcanic eruption and frequent earthquake shocks in the East witl find a most faithful fulfillment of a prediction we published last year from the Siam Advertiser, a weekly paper of Bang kok, dated in June, 1SS6. We saw a wagon passing along the atreet yesterday, while the aon ahoue broiling hot, in which sat a negro man and hia wife with a child of about six mouths old entirely bare-headed. The woman used her hand as a parasol for the child's head whenever any one re. minded her that her baby might possi bly have some brains. The Rkkd axd Goslkn Trouble. The matters between Mess. J. W. Reed and J. W. Goslen, of Winston, are the subject of a three column re ply of the latter in the Twin-City Daily of Saturday last, and while we have . no interest at all in the affair, as it now appears Mr. Reed is at a se rious . disadvantage, the Goslen letter being a ' document bristling with points that are effective and seemingly well grounded !n documentary proof. We hope Mr.- Reed may be able ' to extricate himself from at least some of the more damaging difficulties. Two Ancient Books. The editor owns two ancient books whose histo ry runs back considerably, and which are objects qf no little interest. The first is a work on Logick by Dr. Isaac Watts. The title page in full it at follows : "Logick : or, the Right use ot Reason in the Enquiry after Truth. With a variety of rules to guard against Error in the Affairs of Relig ion and Human Life, as well at in the Science's. By Isaac Watts, D, D. The Fourteenth Edition, London s Printed for J. Buckland and T. Longman. in Paternoster- Row ; E. and C. Dilly, in the Poul try ; and T, Field, in Leadenhall St. MDCCLXV1I (176S.)" The License to print it given in the style of those days by authority of the King, George the and, dated March 21, 1758, and signed "W. Pitt" , On the inside of the back the own er's name the grandfather of the present Writer appears in a bold hand: "Brett Randolph, V i Ox ford, (England Oct. 19, 1777." ? ; . The book is in a fair state of pres ervation, with not a single leaf out of place, nor is there a blot on a tingle page. ' At a matter of course the long s, like our present f, it used, at this was the style then and was continued un$l after the beginning ot this cen tury. ; " " . ' The second is a blank book used for writing exercises in Latin, Logick and Astronomy, and must have been used at Oxford University at the date named in the Logick -1777. These old books have passed through many a scene, have crossed the Atlan tic, and have survived millions of the race who had their birth since the books came from the hand of the binder.
