Mr. I. W. Scott was among the
excuronista to Dalton yesterday. He
came back well pleased with his vis
it. His estimate of the crowd pres
ent st Dalton was at from 2000 to
3000. Mr, Scott, of course, met a
number of his customers, and Mr.
Graves, who was along with his sam
ples, was ready to take orders and
took them. Mr. II. C Coe, who lives
nesr Dalton, not only runs a store,
but a house ot entertainment also, at
which the traveller finds excellent ac

This morning in the trial of Hair
ston for the murdor of Charles Black
burn. Judge Baffin, for the prosecution,
announced that the evidence would not
warrant the State in asking for a ver
dict of murder, and after consultation
with the counsel for the defence, who
were willing to submit to a plea of
manslaughter, the State had concluded
to let the case take such a course with
the court's approval. The court an
nounced its entire confidence in the
counsel for the prosecution and ordered
that a verdict of manslaughter should
be entered on the record. Hali-ston
will be sentenced next week.
Has Taken His Leave. The
fact escaped our notice, or we would
have referred to it appropriately at
the time, of the departure ; of our
worthy young friend, G. O. Andrews,
to Anniston, Alabama, to which place
be has gone to fill an important posi
tion on the Daily Hot Blast; of that
city. We have already given expres
sion to our high estimate of Mr. An
drews, who gives much promise of
success in his chosen calling, and of
whom we expect to hear good things
in the future. The Hot Blast is quite
as much to be congratulated on the
accession as Mr. Andrews is on being
promoted to such a position. " ,
Prof. Carr and Squire Pritchett
were among the excursionists to Dal
ton yesterday. They speak in glowing
terms as do all who have been over
that section of the road of the very
fine crops of corn by the way. Such
corn scarcely ever grows in this part
of the country. - The reports ot these
two gentlemen harmonize very exact
ly about most ot the matters relating
to the trip ; but the Squire says, and
he is a very observant man, that while
the engine stood at Dalton, or would
have stood, the people climbed up on
it to such an extent, to indulge their
curiosity, that the engineer was forc
ed to keep the engine in motion. We
are free to admit that persons who
have never seen. a. railroad engine are
excusable for any sort of antics they
may cut up. An elephant is nowhere
as an object of curiosity compared
with a steam engine. What revolu
tion wiU be ; wrought in that country
within the next ten years with the
railway in full operation. Aw,,
