A Positive Probf that Caucer can
be Cured.
Mr. A. B. Sliands is a Tvell known far
mer, wbose residence is in Spartanburg,
S. C. He is a man of meaus and edu
cation. His standing in ins community
is A1 for truth and probity. While Mr.
Shands refrains from using the word
cancer, the facts he gives settles the
question of the nature of his disease.—
He says his physicians never said the
sore was a cancer, but that they all warn
ed him that there was great danger that
io might turn into a cancer. At any rate,
none o them could affjrd Mr. Shands
the slightest relief, and finally he was
cured by S. S S., the finest and only
absolutely certain blood purifier in the
world. Below is Mr. ^hand’s own let
ter about his cure. Let any one suffer
ing from a similar ailment write to Mr.
Shands, and learn from him, the exact
effects of the wonderful medicine that
cured him:
Spabtanbcro, S. C., April 2, 1887.
Gentlemen—For twenty years I have
had a sore on my left cheek. It had
gradually been growing worse. The
many physicians whom I had consulted
were unable to do me any good. Last
fall a year ago I began using S. S. S.
At first it infiamed the sore, and it be
came more virulent than ever ; so much
so indeed that my family insisted that 1
should leave oft’ the medicine. 1 per
sisted in using the S, S. S. At the end
of two months the sore was entirely
healed. Thinking that the evd was out
of my constitution I left off the medi
cine ; but in November, ten months af
ter, a very slight breaking out appeared.
I at once began again on 8. 8. 8. and
now that is disappearing. I have every
faith in S. 8. S. It has done me more
good than all the doctors and other med
icines I ever took. Yours truly,
A. R. 8hands.

—TVe clip the foIlowiDg from
the last number of the Biblical Ite-
corder, coocerniDg Judge Merrimon
and disagreeing Jurors. Bead it:
North Carolina has been fortu
nate in her judiciary. Only in a
few instances have her rights been
violated by corrupt men, and those
instances were during the years
that immediately followed the war,
when affairs were in an unsettled
condition. Then, sometimes they
would forget Aieir high responsibil
ity. Things are better now. Since
the days of Gaston and Badger, we
have not had a purer judiciary. All
of them are not strong, but all are
just. Some of them have not been
surpassed. Of the Judges of the
Superior court, Judge Walter Clark
has, in many respects, placed him
self at the head. He has rendered
most efficient service to his State
by his just decisions, and the intre
pidity with which he has brought
to justice some who hitherto have
laughed defiance at the law, has
greatly endeared him to all North
Carolinians who have the good of
the commonwealth at heart.
But the object of this article is
not to speak particularly of the ox-
oellence of our judiciary, nor of
Judge Clark. We fnerely wish to
call the attention of the people to
an act of kindness done them by
Judge J. H. Merrimon, also an able
Judge. All honor to him. We are
pleased to witness his fidelity to
his high position and to the people
who placed him there. At the Su
perior Court last week, a man was
indicted for selling whiskey to mi
nors. The evidence against him
was unbroken, and came from three
quarters. Judge Merrimon instruct-
^ the jury that the evidence from
either quarter was sufficient to con
vict. The jury retired, and eleven
of them decided to acquit, evidence
or no evidence ! Was there ever
such impudence! such unbridled
audacity! such di8re.gard of law
and order I But Judge Merrimon
was equal to the emergency. Forth
with he dismissed those eleven
wretched men, with the instruction
to the Sheriff of the county to en
ter their names as men disqualified
henceforth, to-serve as jurors.
This may, at first, seem a little
thing to some people. I! so, all
the worse for them. Just this sort
of thing has been winked at too
often, with a semblance of justice
and a Uriah Heep sort of humility.
The eagle ©ye that discovered the
fraud in the case above alluded to,
has done us a great service, and is
peculiarly fitted to be part of that
branch of the government that in
terprets law and administers jus
tice.

Disckimination.—We do not op
pose immigration bat wish to say
that we should, now while we may,
learn a valuable lesson from the
North and West on this question.
Many years ago both these sections
gloried in their immigration. It
brought wealth and population.
But that time has passed. The
present cry is restriction. C tstle
Garden is about to make America a
poor-house. That which was a mine
of wealth has become one of death.
A strata has been struck which
yields neither sand, quartz nor dia
monds, but filth. 8ocinlists and
anarchists constantly join their,
brethren already here. A writer in
the last Century, thus speaks of this:
“Our daugerous classes have been
increased of late years, by the ad
dition of a still more daugerous
class, one of which is amenable to
none of the influences by which so
ciety has hitherto dealt with the
others. Its numbers are no larger
than those of bears or panthers or
other wild beasts. Bnt it has hu
man intelligence, superimposed up
on the instincts of the wild beast;
its members have the power and
will work destruction to which the
mere brute is incompetent; and yet
their human lineaments prevent so
ciety from dealing with them in
their property capacity until after
they have wrought their evil work.”
We believe we ntier the sentiments
of every true North Carolinian when
we say that we do not want any of
this class of immigrants. It is all
well enough to bring forth from its
long hiding place the bright exam
ple of Borne, and tell us that this,
the world's proud master, was at
first peopled with scoundrels and
murderers ; nor will we yield even
to Mr, Gilmore in his assertion that
North Carolina’s colonial popula
tion was made np of worthless trash
and runaways from Virginia. De
spite what some of the doctors say,
we still believe somewhat in here
dity. Anarchists and socialists,
therefore, scattered over our State
might not improve our blood, our
government, nor onr morals, either
in this generation or in the third
and fourth.
The ofiioe which in North Caroli
na has heretofore been considered
of small moment, is that of the
Agent of Immigration. It should
become most important. There
should be no more piddling. The
changing times make it so. Every
man who oomes into North Caroli
na to settle permanently, he should
come tbrongh the permission and
patronage of this bureau. Thus
tramps and scoundrels may be
avoided. This flowery kingdom
called the South will not much long
er be overlooked by the immigrant.
Ha is coming. He will come with
the ebb-tide. But let him come
who oomes to work, to invest his
capital, and to obey our laws.—Bib
