It is but week or two kitrce it',, was-an' nounced through these. columns that the barking of dogs at oigbt could be stopped immediately if the inmates of the douse would turn their Shoes bot (6ui .aide upwards. .'The expedient was given us by a gentleman in Dan viUeVVa., where the practice is ob served and found effectual, We had forgotten it until yesterday when the recollection of it was revived - by a statement made to us. A lady living on Greene street, who was greatly annoyed by the barking of dogs oO Tuesday night, finally concluded that she would try the shoe remedy. (Her account of the affair yesterday morn ing was thst.it acted ' like a charm. No sooner were the shoes turned up than the two dogs close by hushed their barking and were perfectly dumb. The lady who tested the matter related her experience to her nearest neighbor next' morning, but was so full of laughter that she could scarcely tell it. OUR SANITARY CONDITION. It will be admitted, we presume, that no town in North Carolina is as cleanly as it flight to be, in view of the liability of all to diseases pecu-. liar to the summer sea Son. Indeed the views of people differ widely 'as to what is a good sanitary condition and when a town has been pronounc ed in a .good condition, a person who scrutinizes closely will find something yet requiring, rerrfoval. It. will : be found, we think. 'that there are de caying timbers in back yards, either in the foundations of framed dwell ings, or under fences that have been supposed to be all right. There . are damp spots covered with shrubbery, On which the sun never fairly shines, from which unpleasant odors are emitted) and which are no doubt .fa vorable to tbe origin of diseases in various forms,' J We do trust that our J authorities will exercise special; care in this Important matter, and let no guilty spot escape. . 1 ! 1 y-ii-'.i v ; it; filler There was a "Democratic speech making in the Court House last night Speeches were made by Colonel Waddell, J.
