We , have been privileged to examine one of the oldest books now extant, its date being 1559. It appears to be a series et lecturea or, annotations on the Latin Grammar of Phillip Melancthon, who, it will be remembered, died in 1560, one year after the date' ot the book. The author .of the book seems to have been John Irenens, "Ad Can-' didum Lectosera." The heading of the page throughout the book is, "Annotationet . in Granmaticam," and the number of pages is 758. Three hundred and thirty years is a good old age for a book, but this one is well preserved. ' There seems Ji6t to' have been a single leaf. lost. Th binding is of thick oak board, 0 with a covering ot leather, and has two strong copper clasps,' one 6f which broke off at some t'.me, but it ; tQund inside the book. , Qiite a Dumber of notes are found on the, pages, . but there is no clue to ' the , time when they wer made or"by whom. As to the ownership of the book, there 'is a name en one of the fly leaves i "Jacob D. Mitchell, Nassau Hall (now Princeton College, N. J.) 1834 " Where this book hat been all this while it would be interesting to know, and when . it "made its way across the sea. '.
