A System That Needs Charging
No reasonable man, who is not
an object of charity, would think
of soiott into a grocery store and
asking the proprietor to wrap him
od ten pounds of sugar or a bash-
el of meal as a gift. Yet there are
hundreds of persons in every com
mnnitv who Beem to think the col
umns of a newspaper are public
property and the editor a man
whose - business it is to "puff'
every private enterprise of what
ever tiatnre. pnbliab calls for pub
lics meetings, oharoh fairs, obitaary
notices, resolutions of thanks,
tributes of respect, and all that
sort of thing tor nothing, and pay
for house rent, firewood, blank pa
nar and printers' hire lost for the
nriviles-e of doing it and they do
not hesitate to ask the ' publisher
to eive them dollars upon dollars'
worth of free advertising, when
they would not think of asking
their grocery man to make them a
donation of ten cent's worth of
oooda. This is wrong, and the
' whole system needs changing.
- The columns of a newspaper rep
