Railroad finds that while the train carries generally from three to five sleepers, there is but one first class day passenger coach and one second-class coach, which are to carry all the passengers who do not choose to take a sleeper. The consequence is that there is generally much crowd ing so that it is impossible with a first class ticket to procure a first-class ride, and nothing less than a dogged de termination to beat down all opposing obstacles and ride at aU events could suffice to induce passengers on some occasions to undertake a trip. ' In cold weather the evil would be less, but with the intense heat of the past two weeks the crowding has been an infliction of peculiar magnitude. We ' simply un dertake to voice the complaints , we hear, being sure, however, that one first-class coach will not accommodate in first-class style the heavy travel on the road named. That the crowding in and battling for seats at the various stations on the route should prove det rimental to health and 'comfort can hardly need to be suggested to the in telligence of those who are concerned. Outside of politics CapL Williams is known ai a very clev er man, and has a certain friendly man ner toward al) men without distinction manner which is natural because it has been with him always, and which never remind ane of the electioneer ing trick. Hii hand shake is the same old shake, without any extras, and he very prooerly omits the gashing in quiry about the wife and children at home. . V" The deed lor the Fresbvteiian Or phanage tract, over which there has been a hitch, is being signed by:the proper parties to day, preparatory to the final transfer of the tract to the Richmond ' & . Danville Company. The land is located between the Con cord public road and the Richmond & Danville tracks, just northeast of, the city, and with the adjacent land purchased will make a beautiful and decidedly eligible site for the great shops of this company.' ; This means the greatest stroke ot business ever known in Charlotte history. It will bring 8,003 people here in a lump, and among them there will be a monthly pay roll of $35,000. Chicago may haye the World's Ex position, but Charlotte will take the Richmond & Danville shops in pref erence every time. Charlotte can well afford to throw up her tut and shout for joy. Char. News. '.. ; Tfc OalatM Laat Nlfht., t The Winston Opera Company about thirty-five strong, came down last night as per bills and rendered the "Chimes of Normandy" in Benbow Hall. Fully half .of the 'performers were girls', some of whom were quite good looking and were quite well dressed and had good voices; the same might be said of the male performers, except, of course, none of them were pretty. : The exercises , lasted about two hours and a half too long for a hot summer's night. The Hall was not near full. ! We have not learned the receipts, but know they can't be much, if any, in excess of the disbursements. Dr. Black for the Oxford Asylnm. The ; Twin-City Daily is striking pretty close to the1 head of the nail, if it doesn't hit it square, when it suggests the name of Rev. W. Black, D. D., of Raleigh, as the "successor to Dr. B F. Dixon in the supenntendency of the ' Orphan Asylum at Oxford, Dlay4 Telegram. ' The Western Union Telegraph Co. was sued in the Federal Court in Chicago for $25,000. The plaintirT was the wife of a traveling man who had telegraphed that he would be at home at a certain time, but he did not come at the stated time and his' wife went into hysterics. She tele graphed to him to know why he did not come. The message was delayed and he did not get it till the next day during which time his wife suffered great agony. Judge Gresham heard the evidence and instructed the jury that while the Company was respon sible for the delay, the lady's suffer, ing began before she sent the tele gram and she could only recover the price paid for tolls. A verdict for 35 cts was returned. .
