Dr. Frank Siler,
Junaluska, N. C.
Dear Dr. Siler:
I have just read your beautiful trib
ute to Sister Reeves in the Mountain
eer. I have written very little about
myself in the public prints, but I am
tempted to give you a brief biograph
ical chapter. A ni l.; might just as
well blow his own horn now and then.
I had charge of Cleveland station in
X'2 when 1 was requested to become
chaplain of a cavalry regiment which
finally became a part of (Jen. Wheel
er's command. I married during the
war and brought my young wife to
the French Rrond valley and she was
boarding near Asheville when Gen.
Lee surrenered. That fall (lift) Hol
ston Conference assigned me to the
Waynesville circuit, my diocese em
braced almost the entire county and
there was no parsonage. We lived
!ruing the three years of my pastor
ate in the neighborhood of Richland
Institute, it was a two story building
at that time. I taught school in con
nection with my pastoral work. I did
the work of two men. I was by
young man who was a student, b'so
my wife had charge of the primary
department. We had students from a
number of counties, young men and
women. I think all of Mr. Green Gar
rett's daughters and one son, William,
were in the school. It was the best
school in Haywood county perhaps
the best in the stat west of Ahvttr.
In the meantime I did not allow my
pastoral work to suffer. I was my
own evangelist. We had great re
vivals, many of them were attended
with Pentecostal power.
At the close of my third year here
1 was transferred to Franklin, where
1 remained four years. And we never
lived among better people.
And now I come to the gist of the
matter that which inspired the writ
ing of this letter. You say the great
revival at the Institute was conducted
l.y Mr. Spake, presiding elder, Mr.
Cooper and the M. E. preacher! That
; revival occurred in the third year of
my administration and I did the
preaching. Dr. Frank Richardson was
P. E., but was not present. Nearly
all the students were converted and
pearly all the country round about.
Before the meeting of the conference
in the fall I turned the school over to
Louis Smith, an ex-Confederate sol
dier. And here this long drawn out
epistle must end. You will please
straighten out the history in the
Mountaineer.
God bless you,
T. F. GLENN.
